Former Epic Games' man Cliff Bleszinski has given his two cents on developer Volition Inc and their Saints Row series. He wants them to "keep the crazy action" and mechanics, but 'grow up' a little.
The trouble with the GTA rival is that it's "immature" with its giant purple dildo bats, although it is "hilarious". Bleszinski remarks Battlefield didn't go after COD "by putting dicks on their guns."
These impromptu game design reviews by Gears of War creator Bleszinski come after the sale of Volition and Saints Row to Koch Media. It could give chase to GTA.
"Saints Row. Keep the crazy action and game mechanics. Lose the gimps and dildos and purple suits," began his . "If your average guy is embarrassed to be playing a sequence in a game when his wife walks in that's a bad sign."
"The SR team is amazing. Dildo holds them back. It's immature. Make an open world game that's more Michael Mann/HEAT/Collateral/Training Day," he continued on. "The SR team is one of the few that could actually give GTA a run for their money. BF didn't go after COD by putting dicks on their guns."
"Yes, I think the dildo is hilarious. (I also had a big dildo as a prop in our wedding's photo booth.) It doesn't help industry perceptions." Bleszinski even feels that it beat Rockstar's latest Grand Theft Auto instalments in terms of fun: "Game mechanic wise I found SR3 to be more fun than many recent GTA games. Controls, pacing, etc... are all great."
"Once you put a dildo in your game it doesn't matter if your controls, pacing, graphics are all great," he added.
"You're 'that game with the dildo.'"
Saints Row has by and large been applauded for essentially 'filling a void' of open-world absurdity as Rockstar has increasingly steered Grand Theft Auto away and into more serious and dramatic themes. Where are the weapon-specific rampages as we work to beat the count down? Where are the ludicrous side activities rewarding us perks? Today they're in the Saints Row franchise, which is proud of it, while Rockstar focus more on dramatic immersion.
Currently Volition is developing Saints Row 3.
