The Showdown Effect begins beta today, pre-orders "granted instant access"

Paradox Interactive has banged the beta gong for The Showdown Effect, and also announced that anyone pre-ordering the upcoming "multiplayer 2.5D bullet-spewing engine of chaos" will get straight in.

January 31st marks the start of the beta and those who've signed up with be "gradually invited to do battle". Pre-order customers also get "bonus toys" to play with like weapon skins.

In fact if you pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition you'll get two more weapon skins, two bonus outfits which include a Magicka robe, as well as a digital copy of Magicka.

"The game will be available for pre-purchase later today at http://theshowdowneffect.com/buy, where would-be action heroes will have to make the life-or-death decision between getting The Showdown Effect, or getting the Digital Deluxe Edition of The Showdown Effect," announced Paradox.

A tournament for The Showdown Effect will also be streamed live via Paradox's Twitch.tv channel at 4 p.m. GMT (8 a.m. PST) today. "The stream promises to be an unforgettable event, starring a handful of special guests; including YouTube personalities Angry Joe, NorthernLion, and Rage Gaming as well as Arrowhead’s Johan Pilestedt."

Played a bit of "Magika" in Steam's Free Weekend, and it just cemented my negative feelings for the title. I know it's popular, but just not for me.
This, however looks like it might be a bit of fun. My only issue - it is MP-only:(

Magicka is a fun game if you can get past the unique controls, I struggled with those a bit and I never really mastered the game.
