Star Citizen passes $8M in crowdfunding

While Star Citizen raised a mere $2.1M on Kickstarter, Chris Roberts' space combat sim Star Citizen continues to raise funds and has passed over $8.1M in total. The game continues to receive funding on the official site.

Star Citizen has garnered over 142K pledges since it began crowdfunding back in late October. In fact, over $500K has been raised on the official site in the last two weeks alone.

Roberts stated in a press release, "The amount of support we are seeing from our fans is nothing short of amazing. Our backers are totally connecting with the development team and it just gets them so excited to come in to the office every day and work to make the next great space sim."

Star Citizen is expected to be released in November 2014.

Should be noted that in the last week they were finalising the Citizen cards...turns out a LOT of people were gonna pay more cash to get a shiny metal card with their order.

Bit silly, but hey

I don't care for collectibles, in-game goods are all I need.
I'm still deciding if I wanna up my pledge for the better ship or not, those 30$ can get me another full game or two.

I got the i300 ship thingy, more than investment enough for me.

I still really don't understand why people do this. It's like paying Ford, Holden, Toyota (etc) to make a car. You don't know what the finished product will be like, you get no percentage of profits and you can't sell shares.
If they sold shares in the company, and stock in the game's release to fund the game I'd be in.

You vote on which games get made and which don't :).

Yes, well I've done that with "Endless Space" buy here, as with that title, you aren't voting on which game is made but are funding this game's development. I never trust schemes such as this and with good reason. They quickly become scams.

The reason I funded this...is because it's a space sim...by the guy that made wing commander...in space...mostly singleplayer...in space.

Look, I'm perfectly willing on spending my space-cash on this future game in return for beta access and a discount mmkay?

....SPACE

Don't forget "Strike Commander"...on EARTH.
Good game, actually as was it's Expansion Pack. Damnably hard too.
Though in the days before the internet for PC's, I had to send away for the Patch on 3.5" disc.
But I still prefer a game that I have more knowledge about, not update as you go.

I completely understand that.

This game is a slight exception for me :)

A lot of lower tier pledges for games on kickstarter are really just a pre-order done way, way in advance. If it all comes together then you get a copy of the game. That's pretty much the maximum extent I'd be willing to go to. Ever. The trouble, as hero said, is "if". There is no guarantee that the game will be finished in a timely manner, or even at all. There is no guarantee of quality, or that it will match the dream you were sold on. There is no guarantee that you'll not need to spend more money on subscriptions, or premium content.

Most games lay out what they expect. Some will promise to never be pay to win, or pay to play. Either way, if it doesn't pan out that way, that's it. Your money is long gone, and maybe you get something worth what you spent, maybe you don't.

I fully expect Star Citizen will be good, but the bigger the dream, the more likely things will leak out. The more promises of refining the gameplay, the more likely you are to disagree with the direction they've taken. I will probably play it and enjoy it when it comes out, but I can't justify putting down money now on so many unknowns.

I might be tempted to help fund a game if it was hugely appealing to me, I had strong faith that the team would pull it together and live up to my expectations, and I felt that it might not get made without my support.

I don't really see that combination happening.

This basically is just a pre-order with tons of possibilities for things to go wrong, just as you say Hammer.

I don't just go pledging left and right either, this particular game simply happens to fit most of your criteria :).

Are you interested in the new Elite game coming?

Elite simply had bad timing for me to pledge there as well but I'm obviously interested in it too, I'd dare to guess that most of the audience for these two overlaps nicely.

As a wise man once said: Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace

I played the original Elite back in '83. So awesome, especially for the time. While that's where it all started I think enough games have taken the premise and run with it well enough that there's not a lot of point in getting hyped up about a sequel after 30 years. Star Citizen is looking a lot more ambitious.

Still, them's some fond arse memories.
