Bohemia Interactive begins their alpha trial of Arma 3 next week for those who pre-purchase the game. Four "showcase missions" are a part of it; Infantry, Vehicles, SCUBA and Helicopter.

There are a "limited subset of weapons and vehicles," with two multiplayer scenarios, the scenario editor and mod support. The 20 km island of Stratis is home to the Arma 3 Alpha.

Stratis is but a stones throw from the main slab of land that is Altis, which is a hefty 270 km. This is a "big milestone" for Bohemia, and they're eager for fans to jump in.

The alpha is accessible to those who slap cash down for the Arma 3 Alpha (€24.99/£19.99/$32.99) or Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition (€39.99/£34.99/$49.99) on Steam. There's also a Arma 3 Supporter Edition for those who want to help Bohemia Interactive even more which includes all the Digital Deluxe goodies plus all future Arma 3 DLC.

"The Arma 3 Alpha is a big milestone in the project's development," said co-creative director Jay Crowe. "Testing early and often puts us on the right track towards improving performance, stability and delivering on our goal of creating a robust final release. It's also a big opportunity to get the game in the hands of our passionate community, which enables them to start work on their own creations, tailored to the fourth generation of the Real Virtuality engine.

An 'Alpha Lite' will become available March 14th but does not contain multiplayer or modding support. It's a "free, limited version" only accessible through an invitation given by someone who's bought the Arma 3 Alpha, however some will also be "randomly distributed" through Arma 3 social channels and giveaways.

Is the alpha version the full game just without the deluxe features? Or does that only give you the access to alpha.
I'm wondering cause the price seems a bit low.

From: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/02/26/rifle-report-arma-3-enters-playable-alpha-on-march-5th/

"From next week you’ll be able to play Arma 3. Yes, the headline gave it away, didn’t it? Pre-ordering a “supporter edition” will soon give immediate access to Arma 3 on Steam, or at least to an alpha test of a limited build of the game that will run until the full beta test some time in the second quarter of the year. Bohemia explain: “Featured in the Arma 3 Alpha are four showcase missions (Infantry, Vehicles, SCUBA and Helicopter), a limited subset of weapons and vehicles, two multiplayer scenarios, the powerful scenario editor and modding support. The 20 km² island of Stratis, which is positioned right off the coast from Arma 3’s main destination ‘Altis’ (270 km²), will form the backdrop of the Arma 3 Alpha.” There’s much more to come, as the scope of the test expands.

Hands on with Arma 3′s alpha, as well as an interview with the Bohemians, coming up later this week."

So no it wont be the full game.

No pre-order here, and if they haven't fixed up their less than stellar PC optimisation and improved the keyboard/joystick mapping issues it will be a no-buy on release. I'll wait for the inevitable string of patches and an appropriate price drop, perhaps after the second DLC drops.
