If you still have your music CDs, don't bother using them with your PlayStation 4, as the machine won't support them.

This was revealed in a tweet by reporter Reiji Asakura, that he was told by SCE CEO Andrew House that the CD won't be supported in the next-gen Sony hardware.

The PS4 was revealed in Sony's "See the Future" event on the 20th February.

Sony, you couldn't even keep PS1 backwards compatibility? You cheap, cheap bastards!

I hardly think it's unreasonable to not build a console with support for last-century tech. It would jack up the price of the actual machine, which is a LOT more important than running something obsolete.

Music CD's? What are those again?

There's hardly any point to CDs nowadays, I only have a few left from a few select bands.
I have no plans of purchasing another one ever, music on the CDs is digital already anyway so there's no real use for them anymore.

So if this is to keep the costs down and keep things simple I'd have to agree with the move.

If you are only into MP3's you most likely don't know that the chip in the PS1 was famous for delivering excellent sound quality for CD playback. Also, CD's allows you to rip into either wav or flac - something that is very nice to have if you have a soundsystem to support it. Also, - most MP3's are tied to some digital store so I guess that SONY rather have you buy the SONY preferred MP3's from their own store... CD support being in the way of making your lazy butt order a new set of already own songs and all that...
Now - I don't completely think this is abysmal or anything - the PS3 is an awful entertainment machine and the SONY products so far is equally bad IMHO.

I like my CD's, but I must admit they are for the car or my stereo. Mostly though, it is MP3 all the way (frak Apple).

It is unreasonable when it comes to a piece of multimedia hardware that costs over $300 that plays back optical media. It would cost what, an extra $4 per unit? This is nothing less than forcing out the old physical mediums and making people pay to download content they already own. Do you not realize that this will be the first playstation console that doesn't play playstation games.
