Eidos Montreal "toned down all the things that felt gothic" with Thief's Garrett

While keeping Garrett's "main DNA" in the latest Thief, the development team also "toned down all" things gothic for the infamous scoundrel, so as to "bring in more" of the modern console audience.

They wanted his costume and suit to reflect the more action-based lifestyle he now leads. Game director Nicolas Cantin helped design Ubisoft's Altair in Assassin's Creed; a similar approach was taken.

"We wanted to keep the main DNA of who Garrett was; we didn't want to change that much because it was working already," Cantin told Game Informer.

However they "wanted to bring in more of the modern audience of the console market." That meant that Garrett needed to lose his gothic poster boy image. His appearance would also have to suit its more action-orientated approach in the new Thief. Eidos Montreal "toned down all the things that felt gothic, like black nails and things like that."

The new Thief is essentially a reboot for the series which has been absent a long time. Square Enix is likely hoping it will manage to capture that same reception that Deus Ex: Human Revolution had.

"Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos Montreal, whilst also introducing Thief to a brand new, next-generation, audience," Eidos Montreal general manager Stephane D'Astous said, during Thief's announcement.

Way to discourage more or less all the old fans...

They kinda say first that they will change A LOT - the drawing in more modern console players" and then back to flirting with fans of the original games... You can't have the cake and eat it. Don't forget where DeusEx went wrong - and you might pull it off but more action and console flirts spells like something to be wary of IMHO rather then being excited.

Bringing games closer to console audiences never sounds positive to PC gamers, no way to get that stain out once things get dirty. The control schemes are simply too different to make a game perfect for both, one side has to compromise and it's usually the PC side that has to.

I'm still looking to this game with anticipation though, even a mediocre Thief would still make for a decent game.

That's for sure. Hopefully they can make the controls and design decisions something along the lines of Dishonored, Sleeping Dogs and Batman - at least they are playable and enjoyable.

I think that cutting away the layers of the game that made them special to begin with and make them more action oriented can be the problem though. Still, a bit faster pacing could be OK - but not to make it an action game...

Well if this is the case i will not buy it,i may still get it but no way i`m paying money for something that is not even trying to be good on pc.i`d rather spend my money on indies, they`re the only ones who really make stuff for pc nowadays.

I have to say it`s a really stupid idea to change the character this much, the ones who would be most interested in this game are the ones who played the previous versions a long time ago,now these people are older and have disposable income,it makes complete sense to market it to them because they will more than likely pay full price on day one or even pre-order it but no,consolitis strikes again and the oldies will likely give a big middle finger to Eidos for ruining the franchise they love.
