Cryptic Studios has announced that the next major expansion for their licensed MMO Star Trek Online will be Legacy of Romulus, which will finally add the Romulans as a playable faction. The faction will get the mighty Warbird class ships, while Denise Crosby will be reprising her role as Sela, who is now the Empress of Romulus.

According to the developer, the story has the players "thrown into the destruction aftermath of Romulus and Remus. Faced against an oppressive Tal Shiar regime, it will be up to players to rise up and spark a liberation movement."

The Legacy of Romulus will be arriving the 21st May 2013. Gamers can check out the expansion at the official site here.

What good are the Romulans without being the nasty sneaky ones. Let's turn them into another Federation or even better let's have them join :(.

I dislike this fighting for freedom and democracy plot, it reminds me too much of the spreading of democracy IRL.
Later we're gonna find out that it was all just a Section 31's ploy meant to bring down the Romulans.

Playable Romulans get a YAY, playable "Wah, wah, freedom and democracy" Romulans are a "meh" at best.

Denise, oh Denise. You alone are worthy of a subscription let alone the expansion. Saw her in a sex slave/bondage flick once - ooh, ahh.

Ahem. Sorry about that. As for the Democracy side of things: unleash Remus. That'll clear the drain holes of whingers and whiners.

It's enough that the Klingons have been practically pussified over the years, now we seem to be losing yet another antagonist with a character.

I honestly lost most of my interest in playing a Romulan alt, the ships are the only reason why I'd bother. I just find the idea of playing the nice Romulans boring, there's the Federation for that. I want something different, Remans are a very minor race, they don't quite cut it.

Next we're gonna be playing as the Borg fighting for individuality :(.

Ah well, still can't argue with free.

Get a grip nocc. This is post apocalypse time for the Romulans. Of course there will be a struggle, just as there was when the Klingons lost their homeworld.

Yes but why are we playing the "good" guys? Why not the side that tries to protect the old proper order of things.
That's my gripe, there are two sides to this struggle and we get to play the federation-like one.

If we were to win this struggle the Romulan Star Empire is going to disappear and be replaced with the Romulan Federation.

Not so bad really. The Star Empire didn't have a lot going for it, and besides you are always going to get splinter factions as happened with the Emperor's death in "SW".

I'm just a Romulan "fanboy" (can't believe I just used that term to describe myself) so I'm going to be partial to anything involving my favorite pointy-eared empire ;)

You do know they are simply Vulcans who let their hair down. Well actually that's a poor analogy as they both have short hair but you know what I mean. I have to admit though, that out of all of the still standing races from the original TV series that aside from the Andorians the Romulans were for me the least interesting. Even their original Bird of Prey was pretty crap (paddle board with a couple of generic nacelles on the wingtips).
However, this could be a very good realisation of them in the game. If it's better than Klingon, I'll take it (Federation "fanboy' meself, though I do like the Cardassians).

Cardassians are my second favorite race. :) And yeah, Romulans are off-shoots of the Vulcans. I'll give you that the original ship design was quite boring. I guess what draws me into them is their technology. The cloaking devices and (at least in the original series) high-yield plasma torpedoes were always fascinating for me as a kid.

What we need now is a Ferengi playable faction, much like Birth of the Federation had. (Which in retrospect was quite humorous, seeing merchants assemble war fleets XD)

Ferengi? Bah humbug.
