Shocking news: Disney has shut down LucasArts and has cancelled Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault.

This news is breaking, so expect more information later in the day.

[UPDATE: According to Variety, only a small staff will be kept on to support LEGO Star Wars and such.

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality ‘Star Wars’ games,” LucasArts said in a statement. “As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”]

Sadly, no. Probably avoided announcing it 2 days ago to prevent that assumption.

Go ahead and do a Google News search for "LucasArts".

Oh wow. Many of my first games were LucasArts games...
Supposedly, employees are being laid off and in the future, their games will be licensed. This will, I fear, only lead to typical sloppy movie cash-ins for Star Wars.

A damnable shame, but it's all over the net.

Disney bought Lucas for LucasFILM. They just shuttered Disney Interactive, for cryin' out loud. If they weren't going to support their OWN videogame division...

Star Wars 1313 can be saved if another publisher pays Disney for the license and gives them a cut in the profits.

It should, the game should be mostly done by now so hopefully someone will buy the rights and finish it.

Rest in peace, Lucasarts. Thanks for all the great games I got to grow up with: X-wing series, TIE Fighter series, Indiana Jones series,Jedi Knight series, and droves of other titles that made gaming so enjoyable. 1313, here's hoping you don't die!

LucasArts was dead to me in 2008, when it stopped making games.

Sam & Max, Tie Fighter, X-Wing and Star Wars Battle Conquest, that RTS? Only games I played. Dark Forces too. That ERA was over a long time ago. Empire at War was their last good game.

This industry truly is in trouble and under real threat, from of all things a pain in the arse ratfrakikin' mouse.
So long LucasArts and thanks for all for the fish. Alas, you will be forgotten.

Only upside is that, potentially, someone might decide it's worth looking into licencing Grim Fandango, or Day of the Tentacle. Of course, they may also pooch it...

Those classics I think might be best left to our fond memories, Hammer. Remember what they did to "Leisure Suit Larry"?

Well, Lucas Art is for me a company of the past mostly these days, but still a sad thing to experience.
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight games and Leisure Suit Larry :)

The rest - not too grand. Personally I hope that the spring cleaning Disney does opens up for more takes on the Star Wars universe as a franchise but most of all, a slightly more grittier feel. Well, one can wish - right?

Well for me this ranks with the breaking up of MicroProse by Atari after it acquired the much-loved Publisher/Developer. Sad days back then....
By nocutius (SI Elite) on Apr 06, 2013
nocutius
...also the EA/Westwood incident.

Not nearly as monumental as MicroProse (just saying that name brings back so many memories) but Westwood still managed to invent a genre.

@lichlord
Yeah, LucasArt felt tired and more or less done with the license. Read that Obsidian is fishing for a Star Wars license, and whatever they may lack in making working engines and well made games, they make up for with making good ideas and good stories at least...

Yeah, Alpha Protocol was faulty at best, but New Vegas is on my hard drive since the day I've gotten my paws on it (it's been a couple of years).
By FoolWolf (SI Elite) on Apr 17, 2013
FoolWolf
You can play New Vegas Gale47? Lucky you - the game was so riddled with bugs I couldn't play the way i wanted - the reload animation bugs messed up a sneaky cowboy character. The faulted quests left many quests unsolvable for me and after adding a few mods - the game ran like Syrup...

Nice ideas, fun world - but the coders and quality department should get the boot...
By Gale47 (SI Core) on Apr 17, 2013
Gale47
See? That's exactly why you should patch the game up, go to New Vegas Nexus, download the most consistent and reliable buxfix mod you can find, and give it another shot :)
Yes, it was riddled with a sh*tload of bugs, but you can really fix everything by now.

You guys talk about NV having so many bugs and yet I haven't encountered any game breaking bugs aside from occasional CTD. I even used an unpatched version.

Re: Vegas
Aside from minor glitches, I found that autosaves and occasionally quicksaves would corrupt. It'd show all the right details, but when you loaded the game you'd be a level 1 naked dude in the middle of Goodsprings. As I tend to just use autosaves I ended up getting badly rooted by this issue a few times until I went OCD manual saving.
By Gale47 (SI Core) on Apr 17, 2013
Gale47
You're lucky. I had CTD's waaaay too often. Mostly during loadings. The game is awesome, though.
And this wasn't anything new. I played Fallout 3; even more messed up than New Vegas for me. Now it's cool, after extensive patching and repairing :D
By FoolWolf (SI Elite) on Apr 22, 2013
FoolWolf
Many gamebreaking bugs, CTD's, quests that doesn't trigger correctly. Graphic glitches. Reload animations that breaks stealth - or won't take unless you exit stealth mode.

Condsidering the forums, I would say that you djole381, is one of the lucky few that haven't had these bugs. Seems that the game is very "fragile" and easily corrupted.
By Gale47 (SI Core) on Apr 22, 2013
Gale47
Not any more it isn't :)
I've got 24 hours on one save game with only two CTD's. And those were triggered by faulty mods (I've got fourty or so modifications installed).
By FoolWolf (SI Elite) on Apr 23, 2013
FoolWolf
The patch note hasn't changed since I last tried and noticed the same bugs and simply laid it to rest.

But I am envious of you gaming though. NV is a fun game an IMO better than Fallout 3 though F3 has that lonely wanderer feel better nailed.

I hope for a dramatic change for the 4th episode. Hopefully the success of "older" gamestyles and gamingtypes will open up the possibility for a 3D engine in an over top camera mode or something similar - and of course - get rid of the crappy 100 system alá TES and reimplement SPECIAL system please!
By Gale47 (SI Core) on Apr 23, 2013
Gale47
I'm sorry to hear that. I'll be playing NV all the time now (until I get my paws on Riptide and Starbound, that is).
Hmmm... my wishes for the fourth game is something in the vein of Skyrim, the same way Oblivion is similar to New Vegas.
But I'd play anything Fallout, really.
