Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, completely agrees that software rules the hardware platforms. and that Microsoft has distinct advantages over Sony in the development tool arena and will again.
Microsoft holds a "superior position" over Sony as whenever consoles change Sony's software tools "are lame." Trouble was a lot were in Japanese, which made it very difficult for western studios.
This is in contrast to a lot of other industry notables who have expressed their excitement at the PlayStation 4 hardware, praising it for being a lot similar in method to PC.
"I personally believe Microsoft is in a superior position, and the reason is Sony, whenever they change consoles, the software tools that they have are lame," Nolan Bushnell told GameTrailers.
"A lot of times in the past they were in Japanese; not well documented and getting the software development community up to speed…they may have been able to do it in Japan, but the American software community just says 'Oh boy, what a pain.' And a lot of people don't realize how strong the software community is at making the hardware platform sing and dance." The majority position of the industry is that PlayStation 4 is a step forward for developers.
"Microsoft, because of their strong software tools, will end up with much better products sooner easier, in my estimation," he continued. "And with that, I think will be an advantage. And also don't forget, Microsoft actually has so much money to defend this." Microsoft does carry a very strong financial advantage thanks to Xbox Live.
The chief architect behind the PlayStation 4 has been in very deep discussions with game developers since inception and so it's unlikely Sony will be repeating when it comes to dev tools.
