2K Marin has been busy 'evolving' the planned XCOM experience announced way back in 2010. Thanks to Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown, "the time is right" is explore a new experience in the series.
It seems the XCOM shooter has become a "high-stakes narrative" that's imbued with "core XCOM concepts." It's all rather fuzzy as to what that means, but we can expect to hear more soon.
The reboot of XCOM by 2K was revealed back in 2010 before falling rather silent, and then along came Firaxis with their bombshell announcement of Enemy Unknown.
The entire franchise has been given a new lease of life courtesy of Firaxis' attention to detail in their turn-based strategy Enemy Unknown, which is a love letter of sorts to the original experience whilst making it sleek and exciting. The XCOM shooter has had some growing pains with a few rumours of ideas being scrapped and reworked.
"In the coming days the world will get a fresh look at the long-awaited squad-based tactical shooter in development at 2K Marin. Announced back in 2010, the game has undergone an evolution since we last showed it to you at E3 2011. Firaxis’ critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM," 2K Games.
"The creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration. 2K’s culture allows our studios the freedom to refine their visions, to explore new ideas, and to deliver the best possible experiences for players. Through this exploration, 2K Marin has refined their vision, and as a result the game has evolved into a high-stakes narrative experience imbued with core XCOM concepts."
Those curious about what's gone on with this XCOM project needn't wait too long: "The wait is nearly over and we can’t wait to share more details with you about the game in only a matter of days." 2K has at least confirmed it is now a squad-based tactical shooter, but whether we'll get to 'jump around' squad mates remains unknown.
