SimCity sales plummeted after launch

It seems that the negative publicity surrounding the online-only reboot of SimCity has haunted Electronic Arts, as the publisher revealed during an investor call that sales of the game plummeted after its initial launch.

According to Gibeau, 1.1M copies of SimCity were sold during the first two weeks of release, but since then, only 500,000 copies had been sold.

Many factors went into the slow sales, including the disastrous launch, the negative word-of-mouth surrounding the always-online game and the numerous bugs that have yet to be fully worked out to date. It didn't help series creator Will Wright, who was not involved with the game, called the launch "inexcusable".

A 3.0 patch is due to be released soon to fix such issues as traffic movement.

This is the only way EA will ever learn anything. Sabotaging your own games just because of some policy is not a good long term plan.

Yeah, I don't get it either. They are losing so much money now, as well as getting bad publicity, I don't understand how their minds work.

Well, it just shows that most other businesses already knows: customer=king.
Misstreat them - and they will find another one to spend their money with.

I was irritated with D3's forced online and both AH/RMAH built-in cheating...but bliz kind of got away with it...because they're bliz.

EA doesn't have bliz' rep, quite the opposite, and they rightfully got hammered for what they did with SimCity. The whole industry needs to learn, not just EA.

Bliz has since admitted most people play D3 single player and that AH/RMAH were bad ideas since it lets people cheese thru the game instead of play it and farm it like they did with D2. And they STILL haven't got their just slamming for their forced online.

IMO picking on EA only is kind of silly when it's most of corporate gaming that treats players like crap and needs to get a grip.

Anyways, I was glad to see the web and gaming press slamming SimCity even if some of it had to do with good ole EA bashing.

Don't worry. A special achievement was created for EA for winning the worst company award two years in a row. No other company managed that 'till now.
Sim City, like Civ or Tropico, has a very niche market. And Diablo3 sold well, just like Sim City, through pre-orders. Once the game got out, everyone was aware what always online and auction house meant.
