Developer CCP Games has worked with Valve to have their EVE Online Steam page updated to support monthly subscription charges, as well as their PLEX method of adding game time.
Currently this is only for new players but the existing community will benefit soon. It came to Steam in March 2008 and has seen "tens of thousands" join EVE Online, so they want stronger ties.
The Community Hub and Steam Workshop have also entered consideration by CCP, and they're looking into how they might be leveraged in the future.
The also got something of a visual sprucing up and upgraded the client deployment process, and introduced the new Starter Pack for newbies.
"We first started offering EVE Online on Steam in March 2008. Since then tens of thousands of players entered the EVE universe though this medium, and we want to take this cooperation even further: after all, Steam is the world’s largest gaming platform," said CCP Games. “Other aspects of Steam we are potentially very interested in are the Community Hub and Steam Workshop. Our community team has already started looking into the possibilities here, and we would love to hear your feedback on this as well.”
“We also took an opportunity to clean up the product description for EVE Online, update the artwork, fix the client deployment process and introduce the new Starter Pack for new players instead of a generic game activation key.”
Right now only new users can take advantage of these new Steam features. "Once we evaluate the feedback and data from the first stage of the program, we will look at taking the next steps and adding new features to the integration. EVE Online subscription and PLEX packages on Steam are priced in the exact same way as on our own website, so all players are on equal footing regardless of the way they pay for their subscriptions," they explained.
Steam also supports signing into EVE Online, and even bypasses the need to manually create an account. For more information visit the official EVE Online website to read the .
