EA's Star Wars licensing deal 'almost didn't happen', DICE pushed for Battlefront

EA Games label executive VP Patrick Soderlund said "something as boring as resources and availability" was keeping EA from signing for the Star Wars license with Disney, but then along came DICE.

The studio practically demanded to know why they weren't talked to, and that they 'want' Battlefront. Soderlund admits you "don't really tell them what to do" over at DICE.

He was surprised at their eagerness to take on anothers IP as a project, but then again this is Star Wars: Battlefront and it speaks easily to the house that built Battlefield.

"It was almost not happening," admitted Söderlund. "It was just something as boring as resources and availability. The DICE guys Karl-Magnus and Patrick were talking and I told them we were in dialogues with Disney over this deal and they just looked at me and said, 'why haven't you spoken to us? What are you doing? We want to make Battlefront'."

"DICE is a very particular place and they are very proud of what they do and you don't really tell them what to do. I didn't anticipate them wanting to work on a license - they've always been new IP or their own IP. But they were just like, 'we would kill to make this game' and the whole studio started talking about it like, 'please give us this game'."

Söderlund added that the veterans in Sweden are behind Battlefront. Patrick Bach himself is on the development team. "These are experienced DICE people in Sweden building this game - it's being built in Stockholm," he said. Added to the Star Wars dev list is BioWare, which is no surprise, but also Visceral Games.

The only reveal for the new Star Wars: Battlefront from DICE was a painfully spartan teaser.

Of course they want "Battlefront". After all, "BF" and "BFII" were simply complete conversions of "Battlefield", with their own bunch of mods.
"Battlefield: Star Wars" - sign me up for one spanking new X-Wing, thank you.

I ove it when a developer tells a major publisher, "Excuse me, why the fuck haven't you done this yet? WE WANT TO MAKE A FUCKING GAME!"
