Strategy Informer Download Database Offline Temporarily
Posted: 26.06.2013 14:56 by Kres Comments: 24
We've had a major failure on our downloads/video server. Two Hard Disk Drives have failed and we’re working on recovering the data and replacing these drives as soon as possible. This is a significant problem and we will need at least a few days to recover, in best case scenario. We're very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Thank you for your patience!

Ouch! I hope it is as painless and least expensive as it can be, but good luck SI techies.

Damn, that is a bummer. Hope you guys get around it without having to spend too much money.
By Kres (SI Elite) on Jun 27, 2013
It's one of worse things that could happen. Especially since it holds TBs of data. So working with that a lot of data makes every step take astronomically longer to complete.

Not the first time and certainly not the last time. Just got us in the transitional period between moving from CDN system to normal server mirrors. We'll again have 2 mirrors to chose from when downloading files. One in UK and one in USA.
By herodotus (SI Herodotus) on Jun 27, 2013
Well good luck Kres. Look forward to when it';s is all fixed up, though that won't bring back your lost weekends and hours.

UPDATE: We've completed the work on the drives. We're now moving 2.5 TB of data from bad HDDs to new ones. Once that is done, we need to setup a new server in USA and then we'll have two solid mirrors, one in UK, one in USA. When... couple of days again. Never absolutely certain with these things. Sorry guys for this malfunction...

All is good. Be just in time for "Rome 2 Total War", assuming that it will support Mods.
By Kres (SI Elite) on Jul 02, 2013
It doesn't need to support mods. In which case I wont buy it. Which would be great. More money and more time for other things!
By herodotus (SI Herodotus) on Jul 02, 2013
Yes, well they sell their own 'mods' now as DLC, cheeky sods.

Any updates on the servers being down?
By Kres (SI Elite) on Jul 04, 2013
Files still being copied over. It should be done tomorrow, hopefully. Waiting for an update from the host in UK. But that wont be the end of it. We will try to put UK mirror online while we the set new US server up. I don't want to give any dates since there are some uncertainties as to when exactly some things will be made operational.
By Kres (SI Elite) on Jul 05, 2013
Copy is finished. I will know more later about next steps.

this is very good

One mirror should be up, let me dare saying, later today. But don't have a 100% guarantee... 24\7 turned out to be 24\5. Weekend just passed so I should be able to molest them until it is completed. Sorry for delays.

Ok some good news some less good.

Good news is that we got a server with 24 CPUs and 24GB of RAM that will just serve our files and videos. One in USA and one in UK.

Bad news is that it wont be put up today. Dev says he will be able to complete it tomorrow. But that probably means a few days. Some system files were lost and he needs to remake some scripts from scratch.

To throw in another good news, this situation wont happen for a few years, or ever. There I've cursed it. But the way it will be set, we will always have at least 1 server up. What are the chances of 2 servers burning at the same time? Much much less then having 2 disks and a raid device fail at the same time, which is what happened in this situation.
By herodotus (SI Herodotus) on Jul 08, 2013
Cool. I'd like that setup on my own PC, thank you.
By Kres (SI Elite) on Jul 08, 2013
That thing dims the lights when it is turned on. The most powerful server we've had thus far. It is good to make something good out of something bad, at least. One step backwards, two steps forward.

Onward, upward and expand the living room walls.

It was supposed to work by now as the dev said he put the files online. However I see that all files are with fatal error message still. I'm waiting for an update from the dev. ...

Thanks for the update. Good luck and godspeed sir.

We've uncovered a new layer of problems... dealing with it. So still no conclusion...
By Kres (SI Elite) on Jul 12, 2013
Ok so we've lost around 15% of files we've had in the database. We were unplugged from backup for 2 weeks and this is when the problem happened. We will stop adding new files until we recover the lost files.

However, since 15% of lost files means around 8000 files, we will not be able to readd them all. We will make a list of more popular games and readd their files. The rest will be deleted so we wouldn't have downloads pages with non existent files.

So currently all the files that are available are put online for downloads. For files that are currently reporting "Select server" when you click on the download button, those are the ones that were lost.

Crusader Kings 2 for instance lost 70% of its files... Battlefield 2 lost around 70 files out of 1300. So random files are lost and some games db was hit harder, some not as much.

We're really sorry this problem hit us... this will not happen again. We will devote 1-2 months to readding lost files that were popular and downloaded. During that time only files that are uploaded by authors themselves will be "new". But our file admin/editor will only work on lost files during coming months.

Of course ck2 files are lost as soon as i get the game lol. Good luck finishing up the fixes :D
