Xbox One getting Unity support to aid indie developers
Posted: 28.06.2013 05:38 by Comments: 16
Despite frustration at Microsoft's indie game publishing policies, the Xbox One is the easiest console to develop for, and now it'll become even easier and cheaper, as Unity Technologies is lending its support to the next-gen console.

The Unity Engine has been the most popular engine being used by indie developers to release their games across multiple platforms, and the Xbox One version of the game engine will add support for Kinect, SmartGlass and cloud computing. If that weren't enough, games being published by Microsoft Studios will get Unity engine licensing free.

This agreement may spell the end of Microsoft demanding indie gamers have a publisher by making it more attractive for indie developers to allow Microsoft publish their games to get free engine licensing.

Unity will also be waiving its $1,500 license fee for licensed Unity Pro 4 developers to develop on PC and Xbox One.

That was literally the first google result.

For god's sake Jonah this is getting ridiculous. Do I have to start posting articles in the community section to balance out your pandering to Microsoft? This is blatantly biased reporting! I feel the only right thing to do is to report advantages and disadvantages of BOTH sides but I find myself almost looking like a blatant PS4 fanboy simply because I'm constantly trying to balance this stuff out. YES microsoft support Unity, but Sony has the exact same thing, of which there is no mention whatsoever.

And as for which system is easier to develop for, the opinions all all over the place, the two systems quite frankly are both based on PC architecture and neither seems to have much if anything of an edge.

Well, I do feel your pain good Sir, and applaud your effort!

I do apologise if I seem to be coming on too strongly there, I just feel strongly that any journalism should be as unbiased and objective as you can manage it, and this just is not. I urge you to take a step back and re-evaluate.

Excuse me, but I look at news of the day. What day is it? June 27. That news was back in March 22.

And maybe you should read that this is a special version of Unity that allows easy programming for Kinect and SmartGlass. That's the news there - Microsoft is making it easy for indie developers to use those two functions.

This was revealed at the Build conference (June 26-28). That's why it was announced today.

" neither seems to have much if anything of an edge." DirectX.

So, please, stop the bias talk. Dan, you keep it up with the "sellout" talk and you'll be done here.

You have been going on and on about Xbox and how it's better than the PS4 for weeks, taking every opportunity to put the one in a good light and the other in a bad one. You could have very simply explained that MS is including Unity support instead of gushing over how easy it is to develop for and how it will be even easier and cheaper. It's like a marketing speech up there. You could have also very briefly noted that the PS4 also has Unity support, naturally without kinect as the PS4 does not have a kinect. The fact that it happened earlier is completely irrelevant. Not to mention that I don't recall any article at the time reporting that news either so this was a perfect opportunity to bring it up.

You can post whatever you like but I will be getting my news elsewhere.

No. I have not been talking about how the Xbox One is "far better" than the PS4. Not once.

And Games Industry BIZ could have. But it didn't. I go by what the source states. I didn't go deeper because I didn't think this news was all that earthshattering. It's just a business deal between Microsoft and Unity Technologies with some speculation by me.

And I'm not going to write a "THE XBOX ONE IS TEH SUXXORZ!!!!" article.

Dan, you keep making personal attacks and you won't be posting anymore. Not against me, not against other readers.

Well it certainly is my impression that you can't spare a kind word for Sony and don't seem to be capable of acknowledging faults with Microsoft. Maybe I do have the wrong idea, I can be wrong just as easy as the next guy, but at the very least there is the suggestion here of you picking sides. Maybe you just need to formulate yourself a little more clearly or differently?

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and I assure you I don't have any problem with you personally, it's just that I cannot stand prejudice in any shape or form and lately I have been getting very strong pro-MS vibes from half of the articles with your name on them. I mean just now you quote directx as an advantage for XBox while the PS4 is completely compatible with Dx11! This is not an advantage for either side!

When have I spared an UNkind word for the PS4?

And I don't pick sides - that's for fanboys to do.

Pro-MS? The news lately has been "pro-MS" (and it's not "pro" anything. Just news being reported). I reported the controversial aspects of the Xbox One when they were present.

I usually add speculation when the news item is short and needs more body to it.

This news item is: "MS and Unity sign deal, Kinect/SmartGlass support, Microsoft removes fees from Unity licensing for developers who deal with MS."

Why isn't anyone complaining that I didn't mention Nintendo struck a deal for the Wii U to support Unity too?

No you never bash the PS4, I agree, but you never say anything good about it but always emphasize what is good about the xbox. Do you see what I mean? You're not lying at all, but it comes across as selectively delivering facts.

Again, I'm more than willing to admit I probably overreacted, but there is the distinct impression that you DID pick a side and that it's coming through in your posts. I mean you have to admit that reporting on Unity support for the xbox and how it makes the platform so much better for indies (and it does) WITHOUT just putting a line in there to the effect that PS4 also has this functionality can be easily seen as taking sides in this situation. I mean after all, these two system are being constantly compared for good reason, they are in direct competition.

"No you never bash the PS4, I agree, but you never say anything good about it but always emphasize what is good about the xbox"

Why should I if I never bash the PS4? I never bash the Xbox One either. What is your problem?

And what is there to emphasize about the PS4? It's not news. It's a PS3 with better graphics. The only difference is you have to pay to play online like the Xbox 360 and One now.

Sony's entire marketing was "NOTHING IS DIFFERENT!" Basically, they decided to push the Xbox One in the news to have people discuss what's bad about it rather than what is different about the PS4.

Microsoft is accepting all the PR, good or bad, because when they make a change, it's now news.

(Sort of reminds me of the "controversy" about New Coke. People made a huge huge stink about New Coke, so when Coke relented and brought back Coke Classic, it was such a big news item and hit that people suspected Coke did New Coke as a publicity stunt.)

Again, why aren't' you up in arms about me not mentioning the Wii U getting Unity? And why aren't you complaining to Games Industry BIZ for not mentioning the PS4?

Well am I the only one that "accused" you (for lack of a better word) of being up MS's grille? I can think of several people. So at the very least you have to admit that people PERCEIVE of you as such, so something is causing that. I will give you the benefit of the doubt for now.

One funny thing is my latest news item is about the PS4 and Unity (re: Soul Saga).

Even your own called you Xbox fanboi Jonah ;) Most assuredly in a fun way - but I have to agree with SirRoderick here that you have come out as a bit of Xbox to the rescue man lately. Perhaps that is well since Xbone is receiving a harsh time, but still - they can manage their own defence and shouldn't require one on staff to do that.
The way you have done this is as SirR mentions, by pointing out good things in Xbone's favours - plenty of times and when this is usually only in one direction (not many having bashed the PS4) it is easy to come off as biased.
At least that is how I ,and as SirR mentioned - others have as well, felt the last couple of weeks.

Nope, you are most certainly not.
While Jonah's posts are not directly bashing or promoting either console, they seem to subtly go in favour of Xbox One. Plus, Jonah is definitely biased towards Microsoft's console when commenting.
