Niagara, Ontario police have released a statement that Shadow of the Eternals developer Precursor Games employee Kenneth McCulloch has been arrested on child pornography charges.

According to the release from the Niagara Regional Police Service, "On Thursday, June 27th, 2013, Detectives from the Internet Child Exploitation Unit/Child Abuse Unit, Technological Crimes Unit and Uniform Officers executed a search warrant at a St. Catharines residence. Subsequently, a significant number of computer systems and peripheral devices were seized as evidence."

Company CEO Paul Caporicci issued his own release expressing shock, stating "Having just learned of these disturbing charges today and based on the serious nature of them, Ken McCulloch is no longer affiliated in any way with Precursor Games."

McCulloch was one of the developer's founding members along with Denis Dyack, and was described as a Lore-keeper. World-Builder. Dream-merchant" on his employee profile. The profile is now gone, and McCulloch is no longer employed by Precursor.

Shadow of the Eternals failed its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign weeks ago.

Disturbing as these news are we still don't know if this man is guilty or not. Seems to me that Precursor Games were anxious to distance themselves from their employee before he was even given a trial and a conviction.

They're not required by law to have him employed.

True, but they also didn't have to fire him until the case is resolved.

Not if he's generating profit loss from bad PR.

They did have to, immediately, or their image could be irreparably damaged.

And if he's acquitted, however unlikely that is, they can always bring him back.

I always thought there was something shifty about games developers.
BTW, guys please let's not get into a child pornography "Is it right or wrong?" debate. It's illegal, and that is quite enough. After that, it gets very grey indeed, not to mention sickeningly murky.

The discussion was not about whether child porn is right or wrong. It's sick, disgusting and pedophiles shoud be shot on sight. It was about the fact that the man in question is already guilty in the eyes of the public even when we don't know any facts. What I wanted to say in my previous comments is that this case is of a very sensitive nature and that we should let the court decide whether or not Kenneth McCulloch is guilty. If he's proven innocent, he will stil bear the stigma of an alleged pedophile.

OK, let's stop this line of discussion right now.

Owch. I didn't see the earlier comments that have been deleted, but now I'm slightly nervous to put in my two bits.

Child abuse is just about one of the most abhorrent things one can do. They child may live, but their life has been shattered. Many abused children go on to be child abusers also. Think about that. The abuse was so profund and mentally damaging that they go on to perpetuate the same disease.

Child pornography is likewise a terrible illness. It feeds and encourages the sickness, and is a gateway from fetishist to predator. I fully support any measures to monitor, control, and eliminate those materials.

Now, saying that they should be round up and shot is probably a little extreme. They are still people, albeit very sick people. This guy, if guilty, managed to hold down a job and work with his peers without them getting eew vibes. Ideally I'd like to see these people get help. Sadly pedophiles have a huge rate of recidivism and mostly a "cure" comes in the form of chemical castration.

It's a tricky issue and one that's not going to go away. It's very easy to jump on the hyperbole wagon and shout for blood, but revenge does not help. Something needs to be done, but sentencing the lot of them to death will only make them more secretive, more wary, and more desperate, and nothing makes this kind of disease fester more than secrecy.

Okay, thanks Hammer but we might let this thread lie. Healthy debate is always welcome, but on this I think we are all agreed (most of us anyway) that while not only illegal, it is an aberration of modern humanity.
Let's leave it there.
