Star Citizen reaches $16M in total crowdfunding, brings Hibernation mode

Star Citizen, Chris Roberts' space combat sim, has reached $14M in funding through the official site, bringing the total crowdfunding including Kickstarter to $16M.

Reaching $14M on the official site brings the Hibernation Mode, which allows players to shut down their spacecraft in deep space and resume the game at another point without worrying about other players trashing the ship. The $14M also brings a "Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen" documentary as well as adding a fourth land out option on Earth.

Reaching the new $15M goal will add an escort carrier flyable ship class and "The Upgrade Handbook," a 42-page PDF manual that will be a written tutorial on how players can customize and overclock their ship systems. However, to get the manual, gamers have to contribute before the $15M goal is reached.

Waiting for this game to get finished is gonna be a killer :)

The 16 million goal is exciting too.

Which is EXACTLY why this game is getting so much funding, there aren't any worthwhile ones out there :P

I think i`ll just stick to buying this when it`s out or maybe when the beta is out,far too many things here that can go wrong and i don`t feel like risking it. The biggest problem this thing has right now,at least in my opinion,is becoming like Schafer`s Broken age where the dev just keeps using money without thinking if they have enough to finish it.

I have infinitely more confidence in Roberts than Schafer. He's repeatedly stated what he can and cannot deliver in tis game and that he does not want to allow feature creep to rear it's head. The man has a plan and is sticking to it.

Schafer did not continue crowd funding after Kiclstarter was over however.

Well he is actually, he's just dancing around with questionable wording. He's topping short of asking for money hat in hand, but it's come to the point where he's gonna sell the first hal of the game seperately to help fund the second half.

Meanwhile Roberts doesn't NEED to raise more funds, he HAS private investors lined up to the total sum of something like 21 million according to himself in the livestream. The reason he wants more crowdfundng is that the more cash he gets from the audience, the fewer investors need to be retained and the more freedom he will have making his game.

So Schafer needs more money because he overdeveloped this game and is doing it by selling bundles and chopping his game into pieces. Roberts is already funded but trying to substitute private investors with gamers.
