Stardock aims to do for Star Control what Firaxis did for XCOM

Brad Wardell expressed interest in Star Control for a long time, and yesterday announced that his company Stardock acquired the rights to the IP in an auction held by Atari.

However, one of the developers of an open source version of Star Control II expressed some doubts over the acquisition, stating, “They may now own the Star Control trademark and the SC3-specific IP, but Atari did not own the SC2 IP. If Stardock wants to make a game including any of the SC2 races or plot points, they will still need to make a deal with Paul (Reiche) and Fred (Ford, of Toys for Bob)."

He noted that an email from Reiche stated, "Stardock hasn’t contacted us, so we don’t yet know their plans. Looking at the court schedules (and this is consistent with my recollections), they acquired the trademark ‘Star Control‘ and copyright to the original materials in Star Control 3 — that is to say, not any of the copyrightable materials from Star Control I & II, which Fred and I still hold.”

In response, Stardock issued a press release. “We expect the new Star Control to come in the form of a reboot, similar to what Firaxis did with the XCOM series last year,” promised Wardell, who then added, "We are looking at Star Control II as a major source of inspiration.”

Hoo boy. A big legal fight. I wonder if Stardock knows what they're doing here.

There's no legal fight here. Just Stardock can't make a remake of Star Control 1 or 2.

Still leaves you wondering how much of an inspiration can the games actually be if they cant even use the races. But then again it's not about the exact races it's about the game mechanics, StarCraft nailed that one very well.

They can change the names of the races,so long as they have the same mechanics it will work.

Will they be able to re-create the awesome races of SC2? Doubtfully!!
By nocutius (SI Elite) on Jul 24, 2013
As long as they recreate their character that should be plenty.

"Stardock aims to do for Star Control what Firaxis did for XCOM"

They're going to dumb it down and make it into a joke of PC game because it's designed for consoles?! Isn't there enough of that going on?

Ok, ok, I do actually love XCOM:EU enough that I bought a copy of it for my financially challenged brother during the steam sale, and I think the game does a lot of things well....along with doing a lot of things not so well, and everything it does not so well is usually because of the fact that the design was console first.

One difference between stardock and firaxis, usually, is that stardock will listen to fans, give early access, listen to fans, incorporate reasonable suggestions, allow beta access, involve the actual players.

Firaxis never does anything like that. They never have any kind of open anything early. Closed testing. Zero interaction with fans. They do what they think is best and players be damned.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was NOT "dumbed down". Period.

Jonah play the older games in the series, you will eat your words on this one,i just glanced at the older games and i saw immediately that there was a lot more to do there than in XCOM:EU,a lot of the aspects if the original games were removed and many an old-school gamer did complain about this.

They removed ammo production for instance. Unlimited ammo makes it literally dumbed down. There are no base invasions. Aliens can invade earth but they cannot invade a base of the only effective force standing against them. So yes we got somewhat dumbed down mainstreamed version of it. You can only build one base. I will not count interceptors for other continents. No different ammo types. Only standard granade and alien granade to chose from explosives. No mines, no c4s.

Xcom EU is still a brilliant game. But a bit shallow comparing to all previous ufos, xcoms. Still an awesome game... but...
