"Best franchises are permanent franchises," Zelnick mentions Rockstar's Red Dead

Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick is a strong believer in "permanent franchises" paving the way to "best franchises", and that the publisher looks to their catalogue for suitable candidates, like Red Dead Redemption.

He also mentions Borderlands, BioShock and Civilization. Rockstar has hinted before that more lies on the horizon for Red Dead, which sold 13m copies within two years.

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises," said Zelnick, "that's the unique goal in the industry." Take-Two recently posted their quarterly results with $62m in losses.

"Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines. Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises," continued the chairman.

"Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example. And it's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example."

Ubisoft is of the same mind with Assassin's Creed taking a very prominent role in the publisher's future, with Far Cry tipped to do the same. Then there's Splinter Cell and all the other titles in the Tom Clancy series of IPs.

Last July Rockstar had told fans to "stay tuned for further announcements" on Red Dead. Since launch the highly acclaimed open-world cowboy romp sold 13m copies within two years. Most recently Take-Two revealed that BioShock Infinite and Borderlands 2 sold 4 million and 7 million respectively. Bully has had its trademarks updated as well.

Funny how "Call of Duty" and "Guitar Hero" didn't make the list. Bobby will be disappointed.
