European version of The Last of Us to get censored

PlayStation 3 gamers in Europe who are anxiously awaiting The Last of Us will find that the EU version will not be the same game when it launches on the 13th November.

According to a post by Naughty Dog, “The gore and violence ratings are subject to local regulatory boards in various countries, so the game must be slightly changed in order to accommodate those choices. If you import the North/South American version, it will not be censored, but EU/UK will be.”

Since the PlayStation 3 is not region-locked, PS3 gamers may wish to import that version of the game if they want the uncut version of the game. The single-player campaign is completely uncharged, so the gore removal may just be for multiplayer.

This is weird, it's usually the other way around with EU versions being the most liberal.

Maybe the UK, but definitely NOT Germany.

I was about to say, Germany is usually the culprit there.

But usually the games don't get censored for the entire EU just because of Germany, they get a localized version and that's that.

So, all you Aussie bashers (looks pointedly at Belgium), things aren't so free and easy after all, hey? Funny thing is, it probably won't be censored here. Talk about inconsistent.
And yes, why not blame the Germans...they'll apologise for anything, except of course censoring games.

Well it IS because of the Germans, and you know that. They are the only ones that ever censor anything here. You'd like them.

To be fair, A lot of German censorship issues around violence directly relate to their surrender conditions after World War 2. I'm not sure to what extent that's still a binding requirement, but saying "Time's up! Let's liberate the shit out of this!" prolly isn't going to get things moving quickly.

The Germans are *not* the only ones that censor anything. *Every* country either censors or requires standards to be met. In the EU Germany is certainly the low bar, but if some whackjob was to try and publish something particularly and unjustifiably vile I'm pretty sure every country would be asking them to tone it down a bit.

It's interesting that it's only the multiplayer that's getting the treatment, though that is in-line with my understanding of the German surrender conditions.

As a matter of fact, I do like the Germans. I have several Germanic friends.
Stop being so feral, Roddy.
