Diablo III's new loot system to "cut the legs out" from the auction house

The announced Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo III will be joined by a major update for all players, which overhauls the loot system in the action RPG to get things focused back on the game itself.

Blizzard wants to end the 'auction house first, play game second' mentality that they caused. The solution will be "smart drop" items, and reducing loot levels overall.

They acknowledge there's a "sugar high" from buying items on the auction house, because of the instant gratification, but too many focus on it over just playing the game.

Lead content designer Kevin Martens said "its not the core fantasy, its not the most fun and by the endgame, for a variety of reasons, they tend to check the auction house first and play the game second.

Thats not what we intend, and we do want to address that, so the loot system and the enchanting and crafting systems are both intended to cut the legs out from the auction house; to make it unnecessary to go on it to some degree, where the most fun way to play the game becomes the best way to play the game.

The announcement of an auction house for Diablo III was met with contention from the community, fearing a World of Warcraft economy emerging, particularly with real money purchases - detractors weren't far off the mark.

These new 'smart drop' items dropping from monsters, bosses and chests will be better tuned to your current character. Blizzard are also stemming the tide of rubbish items the serve only to clutter up inventories or just make a mess of the floor. Legendaries will be increased in their number with a greater array of effects.

A new artisan, the Mystic, will be introduced that transmutes items - transferring stats from one to another.

So we say Oh, you want efficiency? How about efficiency, like Loot Runs, how about you definitely get the best gear from there. Mathematically, thats the best. Then they can stop doing that Alkaizer run in act three that everyone does, continued Martens. They still exalt the benefits of the auction house as avoiding dodgy third-parties.

"You play the game to have the fun, get the loot, added lead writer Brian Kindregan . If you cant find one particular thing, you craft it. If you cant craft it, okay, then you go to the auction house. Blizzard won't simply eject auctions.

"Tradings not invalid, said Martens, its just that its been skewed so if youre a character whos spending money maybe youre getting eighty percent of your gear from the Auction House, and 20 percent in game. It should be the reverse at best. Its more fun to kill monsters. Its the same thing I said about Loot Runs."

"If you want the best gear, lets put it in a place in-game where youre killing monsters.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls was announced at GamesCom 2013 and it releases on PC in 2014.

I'm on the same side here - if Blizzard had made a fun compelling game with iteresting choices and gameplay - I would still play it. Now I don't - regardless of the RMAH or whatever. I got bored.

No I say, I want a fun game, where my actions and choices matters, where one playthrough can be different from the other. I don't want a game to be about the gear and loot only - I want to have fun kicking demon ass on the way towards the ultimate fight. The loot should help me achieve that goal.
This game has shown so many times that it it doesn't really want to listen to the many concerns so listening this late, with a costly expansion, with far too few concerns answered - I'm relly meh - about it.

Blizzard, did you know that Torchlight 2 has mods? THAT is something that makes it even more fun to play. You have lost, it is like Def Leppard once said - "we don't make more records because everyone else has become better at being Def Leppard than us"

I agree, it is too late for Blizzards fail of a great game series.

It's too late for the old fans but the new guys just getting into the series can still be salvaged so it's not a completely pointless move.

It IS too late. It was, and remains, a bad design decision to have one. I'd rather play "Path of Exile" anyway.

Agree Hero, I am playing that myself.

Any new stuff in Path of Exile?
Finished it and got bored and have not been playing it since then.
But that's a long time ago now (like 1 year or something):)

for 1 year they changed a lot, added numerous new stuff and reworked the helms completely. You deferentially should check it now. Oh, and they added some new spells.

Yep, it's not one to be missed at all and I know many a "Diablo III" player who turned from that disaster to this gem.

I've been meaning to try out Path of Exile for a while but at the time it was still in closed beta and I didn't get in and then I have basically forgot about it.

How is it regarding micro transactions, is it a friendly enough?

Micro is only cosmetic stuff. No premium and such shit. No ultra items to kill balance.

Very nice, I'll definitely give it a go in that case :).
