Gearbox funding Blackbird's Hardware: Shipbreakers as Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Blackbird Interactive had been developing a spiritual, ground-based successor to Homeworld called Hardware: Shipbreakers. The developer has announced that it will be getting funding from Gearbox to turn the spiritual successor into an actual Homeworld game, retitled Homeworld: Shipbreakers.

The deal was negotiated and signed last week.

Hardware: Shipbreakers was in financial trouble, as Blackbird did not have the funds to complete the game. Gearbox, which is releasing remakes of the original two Homeworld games, signed an agreement with the developer to help fund the game.

According to CEO Randy Pitchford, the game needed “many millions of dollars more”. As a result of the cash inflow, Blackbird is now hiring additional staff to work on the game. Gearbox admitted that while the company bought the rights to Homeworld from THQ, it did not have the tools to develop a science fiction real-time strategy game. Now, the company can let a more qualified studio work on it.

Hardware: Shipbreakers was first announced by Blackbird back in April 2013.

Ok, after their Aliens f*ck up and all that lies, this news is really kinda positive. And if after Shipbreakers they gonna let make Homeworld 3, Gearbox would become my favorite company :)

They must really hold this ball for them self this time, don't outsource the job to crap a studio.

I really wish they`d make Homeworld 3 but i kinda hope it`s not done by Gearbox since they have no experience with any genre outside of fps.

Meh - show it or shut up IMO.
Gearbox doesn't have anything on credit anymore - they show and tell and I won't believe it anyway.

Once the game it is out - then I may start to take interest. Gearbox has burned way too many bridges.

As long as Gearbox are simply funding this, that's fine. Anything actually developed by them, however...well, that's a whole different story: No way, no how, no way in Hell.

Fair enough Hero - they can fund it - then stay the he** away from it for real.
