Star Citizen hits $18M in crowdfunding, $20M will bring first person ground combat

Chris Roberts' ambitious space combat sim Star Citizen has hit the $18M crowdfunding mark, and with it, exclusive star systems for backers, which essentially means backers will get their own system that is inaccessible to other gamers.

More intriguing is the $20M stretch goal, which will bring "first person combat on select lawless planets. Don’t just battle on space stations and platforms… take the fight to the ground!" This will be a very interesting addition in that it'll take some of the air out of DUST 514, the ground combat game for the PlayStation 3 that augments EVE Online.

I am so excited about this game, one of my favorite upcoming games.

To clarify, the exclusive backer system is in fact completely accessible to anyone, all that needs to happen is for a single backer to give away the co-ordinates. But only backers can start a game there is the idea.

Now the Ground combat is intriguing, we know they were planning on proper boarding combat for ages and they are using an engine that is built for a shooter. So IN THEORY, they could easily make a pretty good experience there, just a matter of getting enough assets made.

There is a $19M stretch goal as well.

Like Roderick said that exclusive system means that only backers will be able to start the game there but everyone will be able to access it, so it's not exclusive access but an exclusive starting point.

I wish I could forget about the game until it gets released but with all these stretch goals constantly being announced it's really difficult to stay away.

I don't see myself in ground battles too often considering the quasi perma-death, it will probably be very easy to die there. Unless they make dying a somewhat rare occurrence and most people only get critically wounded or something.

Best managed crowd funding game hands down.

Well at least in your ship, getting wounded is what would happen first, ending up with scars and implants/prosthesis and such. So you don't lose your characters instantly I suppose.

But hey even if you die, you just keep playing as the next guy/gal down the line that inherited your stuff :P

Cloning like in EVE :)

Aren't there supposed to be some minor penalties for dying? As far as I know the general idea is supposed to be that there's a certain amount of times you can die "for free" before you character dies for real at which point you have to create a new char that inherits everything at a slight loss, like inheritance taxes or reduced relationships with factions etc.

So basically death is to be avoided if possible but it's also not supposed to be a major thing, unless they change the rules separately for ground battles only I'd still avoid them as much as possible.

You lose reputation with factions to a degree, both positive and negative is confirmed, a monetary penalty is kind of indirectly present in that you almost definitely lost your ship so depending on the type on insurance you use you will lose cash that way.

So yeah basically death is usually to be avoided, but doesn't seem to come with harsh penalties.

I'm excited for this game, but there's been so little concrete code, or footage from the studio that I've adopted my default "wait-and-see" approach. Especially with crowd-funded projects at the moment, you can never be too skeptical.

If they do deliver on everything they say they will though, this will be a fantastic game.

Well they have the Hangar module out and I CAN confirm that they did indeed model the ships x3

So at least you have that :P

Being bitten hard by so many "promising" games now, I'll be waiting far closer to release before I even begin to start making my mind up. Still, one can't help but get a little excited.

It's only $30 for the lowest pledge without beta access, that's low enough for the small risk involved :).

There isn't any risk involved in this project :)

I stand corrected and I humbly apologize for the mistake OTZ.

Even I'd be tempted to back this game, but if I do it means I won't be able to do any coverage on it for ethical reasons, so I'd rather be able to cover it than back it.

At nearly 20 million, I doubt they need my money at the moment anyway :P
