Grand Theft Auto V hits $1B in sales after 72 hours

Grand Theft Auto V was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this past Tuesday, the 17th September. In just 24 hours, it hit $800M in sales, so it should be no surprise that the game on both console platforms reached $1B just two days later.

To give an idea of just how fast this was, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the previous record holder, taking 15 days to hit $1B; GTA5 beat it by a factor of 500%.

Ze true power of marketing based on a solidly entrenched reputation whilst actually having an interesting product. CoD only ever did the first one really good.

I am waiting for PC version. While I have Xbox 360...its tempting, but I will hold my ground like a samurai.

Colour me crazy, but I don't think playing Rockstar's largest and most invested into game to date on 8 year old hardware that can barely even run it without igniting into flames is a good idea. The PC version of GTA IV looks better than the console version of GTA V. Just imagine the difference when they release GTA V on PC plus a few months of polish.

Few months polish? You forgot how badly ported GTA IV? :)

I am not surprised at all :)

No worries, PC version will be better, cuz (finally!) it will be without GfWL ;-) And I hope for some DX11 features...

As a gamer and programmer I'm impressed since those are nice numbers - even if I'm beyond sick of consoles and their influence on PC game design/ports.

I don't really get the appeal of this game and it makes me wonder about the state of society when something like this is so popular.

Don't look at us... as much as some people read our coverage of the game, I doubt we could inspire $1 Billion dollar's worth of people to buy this game. This is all you guy's fault :P

Something like this? You mean an open ended sandbox that's absolute hilarious fun? Yeah I wonder why that's popular x3
