Assassin's Creed IV hits Steam, regional discrepancies found between US and EU

Ubisoft's swashbuckler Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is now pre-purchasable through Steam. Hooray! Standard and Digital Deluxe versions are offered with extra game content swag - but not for everyone.

Using our Captain's spyglass (browser) it's not difficult to spot there are some regional shenanigans going on between US and EU. North America gets a Gold Edition at $80.

This high priced edition includes more bonus content as well as a Season Pass, whereas European Steam users only get the Digital Deluxe Edition. What's going on?

Steam user 'Pakundo' pointed out the high seas piracy in the official Steam AC3 forums:

"The way things are, on the US Steam store page, the $80 edition of AC4 is the Gold Edition, which contains more content and includes the Season pass, as opposed to the Digital Deluxe Edition, which is also up for $80 or 60 euros in some regions," he explained. "...I'm finding it hard to believe this is much more than regional discrimination."

"...if you live in the US, you could pay the same as I would, but unlike me, you'd get all Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag content ever, as opposed to me, as I would not get the Season Pass, and some additional minor content."

"That is just not right in my eyes, and while I'm entitled to exactly NOTHING, I still think this is worth mentioning, and yes, even complaining about." Pakundo posts two comparison shots of the EU/US editions, which are below.

What reason exactly does Ubisoft have for this rather punishing discrimination against European users? It's not a matter of 'currency conversion' and 'stock costs' as these are digitally distributed. Hopefully the situation will be met with justice, but will more than likely need a lot of noise from the PC community first.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag releases on PC November 22nd.
