Marvel's Chris Baker has gone into more detail about Beenox's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is due out before the film of the same name May 2nd, 2014. It's not a direct tie-in but includes "key moments".
Already revealed is an expanded Manhattan, but RPG light mechanics include "different types of webbing" to choose from. We'll also be playing as Peter Parker.
While the game The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a direct sequel to the first game, the second movie includes none of the events from the video games. The games are 'going their own way'.
"Think of it in terms of the first movie happened and that established our game world," explained Chris Baker from Marvel. "The first game happened, which was an extension to the first film. From then forward the movies are going their way and the games are going their way." No Oscorp nanobots running rampage then? Apparently not.
"However, we are going to take some key moments that happen in the second film and adapt them for the game."
Combat and web-slinging has been adjusted for the sequel, with RPG light features including a variety of webs to choose from. There's also a 'Hero or Menace' mechanic to measure up how well you accomplished your crime fighting.
"Webs are a big part of Spider-Man, so the cool things we're doing differently this time is that we have different types of webbing," he said. "We have your typical impact webbing, your regular vanilla webbing. We are also going to have cryo-webbing. It sort of adds an RPG-like element."
Webbing outside of combat has been given an overhauling as well, thanks to fan feedback.
"Some people complained that the webs didn't attach to the buildings and they're going to do that now," said Baker. Right and left triggers will be used while swinging through Manhattan, which isn't as small as the first game as Beenox expands it to include more of the fictional universe. "We're hoping to get Spider-Man universe things in there," he added.
"In the last game you found yourself in sewers and warehouses a lot," he said. "This time most of the action takes place in the open world." This certainly makes sense if the studio is planning to have us play Peter Parker, and not just Spider-Man. We won't be having long stints as the young reporter though, and it's not all about photography.
"I don't know how much I can talk about that stuff," admitted Chris Baker. "You'll be a reporter minimally, but it is an aspect of what Peter is doing," he said. "You are Spider-Man for a vast majority of the game though."
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 releases on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One and PS4 in early 2014.
