Indie developer Perihelion Interactive has released the first gameplay trailer for its Tsar-era Russia-inspired science fiction RPG The Mandate, which features an open universe to explore. The game is currently on Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight, and due in Q1 2015 for PC, Mac OS and Linux.

Players take on the role of starship captain, in command of a vessel that constantly evolves and upgrades. In the spirit of Star Trek, players must not only deal with combat situations, but interpersonal issues between crewmates while exploring new worlds. The developer cites X-Com, Fallout, Mount & Blade, Sid Meierís Pirates! and Star Trek Online as The Mandate's chief inspirations.

The game's Kickstarter drive has been highly successful so far, raising $175K of its $500K goal with 34 days left. Players can visit the Kickstarter page here.

The Steam Greenlight page can be found here.

It's nice to see the Russians make it to space for a change. I love science-fiction but... sometimes it can all be so American.

True that's a plus, I'd also welcome Prussians or Space Napoleon and the like.

Space Prussia can be *very* interesting as seen in the case of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, this is the best space opera ever (singing and Space Napoleon sold separately):

This is one of my top 3 shows and I can't recommend it enough even to those that don't really care for anime. The books that the show is based on are sadly not translated.
