What happens when you take Puzzle Quest and mix it with Professor Layton and JRPGs? You get Fruitbat Factory's 99 Spirits, which was released in Japan and in the West on the 31st May this year. The game is now available on Steam after a successful Steam Greenlight campaign.
The puzzle-RPG is based on the concept that after 100 years, inanimate objects become self-aware. In the time of Medieval Japan, a town is infested with evil spirits who kill protagonist Hanabusa's mother, who hunts the spirits down in revenge, with the help of the white fox Komiya, who gives her a magic sword to aid her in her quest.
When a spirit claiming to be her dead father breaks the sword, however, Hanabusa begins a mission to mend her sword and find out more about her father.
99 Spirits features 40 unique characters and over 100 monsters to battle; the combat revolves around discovering the true identity of Hanabusa's enemies as she fights them using puzzles.
As is usual for Steam games, the title also features 49 Steam Achievements, Steam cloud saves, and Steam trading cards. Players can even switch between English and Japanese spoken dialogue.
