Star Citizen "will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform," says Chris Roberts

The community of Star Citizen erupted in panic as a recent Wingman's Hangar episode revealed a PlayStation 4 devkit was in the Cloud Imperium Games offices, leading to rampant speculation.

Chris Roberts, ambassador of space sims, has affirmed that Star Citizen is a PC game that won't even dilute itself for a "lesser platform," and they "will NOT limit" themselves.

Star Citizen is a purely crowd-funded game which holds the title for most funds and one it will hold for a long time as pledges keep rolling in. It recently cleared $27 million.

Freelancer and Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts took to the official Star Citizen forums to address the community in person and to assure everyone the sky isn't falling because of a PS4 devkit.

"I figured it was best to post this in its own thread instead of one of the many "Star Citizen on PS4, the sky is falling!" threads that sprung up this weekend after a PS4 devkit was spied in background on Jason Spangler (our CTOs) desk," he began. The studio and community enjoy a very intimate line of communication, which has led to the huge waves of interest in Star Citizen long after its Kickstarter campaign ended.

"While some could view the 1+1 = 256 logic that it required to come to the conclusion that we were ditching the PC for PS4 as an overreaction it does show how passionate everyone is in this community about the PC as the best gaming platform, which warms my heart!"

"Star Citizen IS a PC game," continued Roberts. "It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform. We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations."

"I just upgraded my office rig to a pair of Titans running in SLI, driving a 4K monitor and a 1440P one (Thanks NVidia for the goodies!). We’re about ready to build the ultimate AMD rig with FOUR R9 290Xs and AMD’s eight core CPU driving a set of 4K monitors in Eyefinity (Thanks AMD!)"

"You think that’s a good approximation for console, even a next gen one like PS4 or Xbox One?"

"I LOVE the PC as a platform because it is open, is always moving forward, with new powerful components (usually at cheaper prices) becoming available to gamers available every year. A $3,000 high end PC gaming rig of today wipes the floor of dedicated graphics supercomputers costing over $1M 10 years ago. People were amazed at being able to get Giga flops of performance. Now we can obtain over 5 TERA flops on a single PCI-E GPU!!!"

"The PC platform is great because it isn't static. It doesn't have rules or some controlling entity that decides what will and won’t be in the eco system. If a cool new disruptive technology like the Oculus Rift comes along it can have a chance to gain traction and become the next big thing."

"Because of this Star Citizen will always be primarily a PC game and will embrace the best and newest tech."

Kinda sad he actually had to clarify this point in the first place.

'Star Citizen will always be primarily a PC game'

The word 'primarily' is the giveaway. How different is this - 'Star Citizen will always be solely a PC game'?

Completely different, obviously.

I'd say we'll see a version of the Star Citizen single player game on PS4 someday. It's low hanging fruit.

Not a chance in hell, it couldn't even handle the hangar module...perhaps it might be available later on something like a steam machine.

People gave the money for PC version. Thats all.

And some would give them even more money for the PS4 version ;).

I have ZERO issues about this game being ported to the PS4 one day, it won't make "my" beloved PC version any worse. All you have to do to see that they're not screwing around when they say that this is primarily a PC game is to start up the hangar module and see your PC weep trying to run it, if it's not weeping it just means you don't have enough ships :P.

The PS4 is unable to run CURRENT PC games at decent specs, why on earth would it be able to offer anything like a good experience on a game that has been built from the ground up to push PC tech?

I will gladly bet my ass that this will never get onto consoles, just not gonna happen.

They can just lower the graphic fidelity to low enough levels and it's done, I won't look nearly as good as on the PC but I see no reason why a PS4 version would be impossible to make. It should not matter too much cause PS4 owners would be getting exactly the graphics they're used to getting by that point so those low-ish gfx settings would look good enough to them.

I'd have no probs if they put out console versions of any game. The only problem is when they design for the console and have a kinda shitty PC port. If they make a kickarse PC game and shave off some of the beef to let it fit on a console, well fine. Just means I can gloat to the console peeps at work about how much nicer mine looks.

Oh come on! Leave the cool game as PC exclusive, strike back to those pesky consoles who always try to have some exclusives.

The cool kids don't need any exclusives, those are for posers :).

Screw exclusivity, with the new consoles having architecture close to PC there will only be a few franchises that will be exclusive and that`s great for everybody,i bought a damn ps3 because there were games there that i really wanted to play, first of all this should not need to happen,we are all gamers here, regardless of platform we all love videogames,it`s better for everyone if every platform can play all games.

No! Death to consoles! PC exclusive FTW! For Gabe! For Steam! :)

I agree with PC FTW part but the later two are a bit dangerous to say the least :).

Steam are not completely innocent either, remember Google being the good guys? I doubt anyone still considers them as such.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely ;)
Competition is good and options are great, but if people are blind sheeples it doesn't matter.

As far as not going to consoles, graphics aren't really my biggest grief, it is the input and game design limits that is the biggest drawbacks.
