A $100,000 LAN tournament is to be held the weekend following the March 25th release of SMITE, Hi-Rez Studios' free-to-play MOBA. Over 2.5 million user registrations were created for the open beta.

March 29-30, 2014 is the date of the LAN tourney which will take place in Atlanta, Georgia before a live audience baying for virtual blood. It will throw the top four EU and US teams in the ring.

Those teams will be decided by the SMITE Weekly Tournament Series beginning January 4th, 2014. Hi-Rez confirms that all player progress from the open beta will carry over.

My personal favourite of the Dota style games right now, so much easier to get into, very low waiting times for games, a community that is noticeable better than either LoL or Dota2 (so far) and just more action oriented gameplay.

Definitely worth a try if you're interested in the idea of a Dota game but those more traditional ones seem a little time-intensive to get into or if you just want a somewhat different perspective on the whole thing. (quite literally)

I'm also a HUGE fan of the business model they have been wielding. You have a rotating roster of free Gods to choose from if you jut want some casual games, you can seperately purchase the ones that seem most appealling to you ala LoL OR you can put down a reasonable sum of money to purchase all current and future gods at once. The current pricing for that pack is 30 USD, so not too bad really. Of course that's for the beta, I expect they might le that go up a bit close to release, hopefully to something that's still fair.
