First Starbound beta launching today for backers

Chucklefish raised over $2.1M in crowdfunding for Starbound, which can best be described as "Terraria in Space", where players explore a procedurally-generated 2D world while crafting and surviving on the landscape's resources.

The developer promised that there would be three betas late in the year, and now the first beta, open to backers, is now live. The beta is not feature-set yet, but it does have multiplayer, so gamers can visit each other's planets.

It's not too late to get into the beta, as Starbound is available on Steam Early Access, and preordering for $14.99 USD will grant instant beta access.

Chucklefish also released a new trailer showing off the beta build - check it out in the video below.

lol - I was like "Early Access?? Why didn't I see this earlier???" Only went up in the last few hours or so.

I'm pretty keen for this. Prolly not $15 for a beta keen, but close.

Early Access means you get the final game free.

The FPS is abysmally low for me. Spins around 15-20. Jesus. I was too hyped for this and now am left out in the cold. Hope the devs get around this issue soon.

I'm enjoying it and have no performance issues. I put over 150 hours into my first play thru of Terraria. I expect to get even more out of Starbound overall so $15 seems reasonable.

Keep in mind this is NOT a finished product. Tell the devs about the bad framerate - you're helping fix the beta.

Yep, I understand that you're paying for the finished game and getting beta access right away. I'm just spoiled by all the sales :P

@Gale47
I too have FPS issues. Tried some of the fixes that were discussed on forums but none worked for me. Seems we'll have to wait for a patch...

Same here, mate. Altough, I have to admit that yesterday's patch did improve it - a tad bit. And the problem is widely known about, Jonah. I did send them some feedback, though. My friend is running this on a six - year old laptop for God's sake :D

Yup, patch improved things a bit and running the game with starbound_opengl.exe instead of starbound.exe also helps.

People getting early acess versions and being dissapointed and missing functions or poor performance....they need to go away

I'm not disappointed SirRoderick. Quite the contrary...

SirRoderick: At least they're on the ground floor and their complaints are a part of the debugging process.

Well true, but it's just unreasonable to go in expecting a polished game, which a lot of people still do. You get people feeling like Gale up there with his FPS problems.

I've got a few early access titles and my only gripe is one which should have some fairly standard controls, but which I cannot work out how to play at all. It's possible that there is no actual in-game content yet, in which case I think they should probably have held off a bit longer before putting it up for sale. There's prolly a wiki somewhere which tells you what arcane button combinations you need to do complicated maneuvers, like turning, or going forward.

Also, I went to report bugs for one game and got told off for posting bugs in the wrong section - but could not access the "correct" section of the forum, which appears to be for the dev team only. They prolly know about the bugs and design issues I was commenting on, but really, for an alpha, they should have better abilities to report issues.

Hey, I wasn't expecting a polished product. Just to get this clear, I WASN'T expecting it to run this bad, either. That is all.
