In a slightly unorthodox move, Io Interactive have announced via a website news post that they are working on a new Hitman game for next-gen consoles and PC.

"Dear Hitman fans," reads the post. "We wanted to share this open letter with all of you out there eagerly awaiting more news about what’s happening next in the franchise. At Io-Interactive right now, we are building the next AAA Hitman game for PC and next-gen consoles."

The post goes on to confirm a few details about the game. It will use the same engine as Hitman: Absolution as a backbone, and will apparently have the largest levels the series has ever seen.

"In the next game you will experience a globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career," the post continues. "The apex predator stalking his prey across the world, with the support of his long-term handler Diana Burnwood and the whole of the ICA."

Contracts mode is also back, with players able to create execution challenges within the game's maps and share them with the world.

More info is coming this year, we'll keep our eyes open. Are you excited by the news?

Oh, so it's going to be a kind of a throwback to a "happier" 47 era, eh? Sounds great to me!

Awesome. I hope the story is less intense, and more of doing actual missions. Well, some story is nice, but I don't think Hitman is a game that requires such an expanded story. The way they used to do it in the first four games was excellent.

Yeah, I agree. He's a professional so we should just do missions without many emotions prowling about.
ALSO, I hope we get the whole weapon collection "meta-game" back :D

Would prefer some more open maps that opens up for more sniping. I was hoping that with the sniper challenge that sniping would be something that also came into the main game but there were precious few options where sniping is actually a good approach at all.
