Oxide Games showcase 64-bit Nitrous engine with unprecedented space battle

Prepare to swoon PC gamer as former Civilization series devs who formed Oxide Games are now showcasing their 64-bit game engine Nitrous, and have gone straight for the jugular with space battles.

This isn't just any battle wots in space, but a mighty conflict between hundreds upon hundreds of units. They're all calculated individually, including their weapons turrets. It's powered by AMD's Mantle.

Of course the Nitrous engine isn't limited to just strategy games but because it can handle so much going on at once, thanks to actually using all your CPU cores, it fits well.

The Star Swarm tech demo (sorry, it's not a game) shows exactly the kind of space strategy we've been begging the gamer gods to deliver unto us for decades but have failed because of silly technical limitations. Thanks to the rise in 64-bit, and the likes of AMD's Mantle, we can now start to dream of seeing thousands of starships battle like in Star Wars.

The Oxide team show that it isn't exclusive or limited to Mantle, but that DirectX needs to have some sacrifices made in order to play smoothly, like turning off motion blur. The Star Swarm technical demo is expected to be released on Steam soon for all to try and subsequently mess their underwear over.

I can only dream about a Legend of the Galactic Heroes game with this engine, would be so cool :(.

Looking hawt. I'd really like to play a space flight sim with battles like the beginning of Attack of the Clones. Oooh - what about a Robotech game?
