According to Pioneer these new discs are thanks to a "breakthrough in material of reflective layers." The 400GB discs have 16 different layers to them.
The best part is they claim compatibility with current Blu-ray Disc players which hopefully includes the PlayStation 3's own hardware. This new "super" disc coming in 2010.
"The technology of the super multi-layer read-only disc is based on Blu-ray Disc with a breakthrough in material of reflective layers," says Pioneer.
"The specifications of the pick-up head (PUH) of the disc is the same as those for the PUH of blank BD discs, and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD players."
They also expect a rewritable version of the discs to hit the market sometime between 2010 and 2012, they also plan a 1TB disc by 2013. The company showcased their disc with behemoth capacity during the IT Month fair taking place in Taipei.
