Steam reaches 8 million users during height of Summer Sale

Presumably due to the ongoing Steam Summer Sale, there were 8,020,834 people using Steam this weekend. That's a new record for Valve's service, which had previously topped out at around 7.5 million concurrent users.

The stats were first noticed over at NeoGAF by member Nzyme32. "To the best of my knowledge Steam passed 7.5 million concurrent users over Christmas," he wrote in a post yesterday, "but has seemed to peak around 6.8 - 7.2 million since. Today I noticed they peaked to 8,020,744 concurrent users, today being the final "encore" day of the summer sale."

Here's a snapshot taken by Nzyme32 during peak traffic.

It won't be a surprise that the Summer Sale's Encore Stage, a final set of deals before the promotion closes, coincides with those high numbers. Either way Steam continues to grow in size and influence; last December the service reached 7 million users.

Must be pretty sobering for some of Valve's rivals. Your move, Origin.

The final sale was just a recap/redo so I'm somewhat surprised (and it did little for me due to my spending spree throughout). I bought 20ish items - mostly games but a few xpacs or xpac-like DLCs I'd been wanting.

I did reconsider a few of my choices not to buy during the recap, but ultimately decided that I was happy with my choices.

Course, now I gotta play them all, lol

Wasn't even a very good sale either, with most big games having the base game mightily discounted but the DLC's left at full price - sneaky. Ended up buying...two, for less than $5 each and am very happy with both.

The problem is that I just don't have enough time to play them all. I have a huge backlog of games. So many good offers over the summer sale.

lol, yeah. There were a lot of really great offers, but I already had a lot of them. A few titles could use a price drop tho. It's prolly a little Aussie punishment stuff, but there were a few games where I didn't want to pay that much even at 75% off. Hell, I think Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has actually gone *up* in price $10 since release.

I did get quite a bit of indie/budget titles and older games tho. Like,25? Also got a little DLC for a couple of existing games and Octodad gifted to the kids' account and paid for with their pocket money.
