Oculus sold more than 60,000 development kits for the DK1 version of its VR headset the Oculus Rift. Now the companythat another 45,000 units of the newest DK2 version have been pre-ordered ahead of the shipping date late this month.
The second-generation development hardware costs $350, and comes with a new external camera for greater range of movement tracking and a 1080p OLED display.
"We expect to ship roughly 10,000 DK2s from the factory in July," writes Oculus, "with just over half of the units through distribution centers and on their way to doorsteps before the end of the month."
They do warn that they're having a few issues with manufacturing, so some developers with expected shipping dates in July won't receive their DK2 until a few weeks later.
45,000 kits is a pretty impressive amount of developer orders. This VR craze shows no signs of abating. Expect every single studio in the entire world to have some kind of Oculus-compatible announced by next year.
