You lucky backers of Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity will be getting your grubby hands on the game earlier than you might have expected.

According to the latest developer blog post on the game's website, which also looks at some of the creatures you'll battle during your travels, the beta build will be released to Kickstarter backers on August 18.

“In our next big update," the post reads "we will discuss the upcoming Backer Beta in more detail as well as what it will entail and how to redeem your copy. We will be releasing our Backer Beta on August 18th.”

Obsidian say that backer updates and posts will be less frequent as the game gets ever closer to release, as the team will be busy finalising, bug-checking and so on. In addition, the documentary on the game's development promised to backers will no longer be a physical copy, but a extended digital download instead. Obsidian will be replacing the DVD/Blu-ray with another reward.

After so long waiting for this game it's getting very close, isn't it? In a great year for RPGs Pillars of Eternity could be the icing on the cake.

To tide you over during the interminable wait, here's a couple of videos of the creatures you'll be smiting when the game is finally out; elemental Blights and kobold-wannabes the Xaurips.

IF we're talking purely technical beta and it's content-complete I'll give it a run, otherwise I'm not gonna touch it. Don't really feel like playing an incomplete RPG :P

Obsidian is the only professional Kickstarter developer, who demonstrated ability to create a quality fantasy RPG.

What about the wasteland guys? That seems pretty on track as well.

We've seen far less of Pillars than any other similar project. Obsidian is too corporate and holds everything back. Games like Divinity and WL2 were/are more open and are getting tons of feeback and refinement via that feedback and it makes for a better game. I hope those beta backers are numerous and that obsidian is open to feedback.

The beta access to Pillars might actually be limited to quite a small number. From what I can tell it required you to either back at the $110 tier or above, or be purchased as an add-on for $25.

As a backer Voqar I can absolutely promise that Obsidian have shown a ton of information about the game, in fact their Kickstarter is one of the best in terms of great updates. Every monthly update is backed full of cool info about the world and the game.

And they're definitely open to feedback - in one post they mentioned item degradation, many backers said they hated it (me among them), and in the next update they said they taken it out.

I don't know if there will be a proper Early Access, but this beta is backer-exclusive and only for a the $110+ backers.

Indeed, they're at update 82 or something like that. And all of them have actually had content, so no idea where on earth you get that Idea Voqar.

To be fair the one thing they haven't really done is release videos of gameplay, but then this is the type of game that only comes together at the very end.
