Troubled Midway scrambles to cut costs, 25% of workforce booted

In an effort to minimise their losses, as they already face huge debts, Midway has started to trim staff numbers and canned some "non-core" game projects.

Under this new initiative their Austin-based studio will close and staff let go in Chicago and San Diego. This is to combat "specific challenges" facing Midway right now.

The Austin studio created BlackSite: Area 51 which didn't go down favourably with critics and the games creative director Harvey Smith admitted to it being "disastrously off rails."

"These initiatives, along with the other steps we have taken this year, are a response to the specific challenges we are facing at Midway, many of which have been amplified by the current economic conditions," said Matt Booty, Midway CEO.

The Midway Chicago team was behind the recent Mortal Kombat vs. DC but haven't been spared the cut backs. The cancelled games, which haven't been made public, would have hit in 2010/11. The company's debts have reached over $200 million.

Am I wrong that the latest real hit of Midway was Mortal Combat, back in the '90s?:)

I dunno, Deadly Alliance wasn't too bad. But they really went downhill after that. :(
