Metal Gear Solid 5 is coming to Steam on launch

In somewhat unexpected news it looks like Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain (which still sounds a bit like a worrying euphemism for irritable bowel syndrome) is coming to Steam.

The news was leaked accidentally by Konami just before yesterday's big MGS5 live-stream. That's the first time in the franchise that a Metal Gear Solid game will launch simultaneously on PC and consoles.

Kotaku spotted the big reveal, hidden on the Konamu US website. While Metal Gear Solid has never made it to the PC at launch, tie-ins and PC ports have popped up in the past. Sword-fighting spinoff Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance launched on Steam this year, and the first and second entries in the franchise were ported across some time after their console debuts - albeit with rather mixed results.

No word on a possible release date yet, but we'll get back to you when Konami say more. Series creator Hideo Kojima confirmed the rumours were true during the company's live Twitch stream, and revealed that Steam customers will get a unique cardboard box to hide in. Best pre-order content ever.
