Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has told that the publisher plans to expand its sports games in an attempt to gain more market ground in this category for 2009.
Shaun White Snowboarding has been doing well, with sales generating over €500 million in the three months to December 31st. This is why Ubisoft are planning to gain more ground in the sports market, as Shaun White Snowboarding has given the company a taste of how successful sports games can be.
Guillemot wants to do battle with other popular publishers that have a strong position in the sports market, mainly 2K Sports and Electronic Arts. To do this, Ubisoft is looking to acquire a development studio that specialises in developing sports based video games. Who they might acquire we aren't sure, but we should know more within the coming months.
"Sports is a difficult genre to break into and I am extremely pleased with the results; Shaun White Snowboarding was our first tie-in with a professional athlete and it has been a huge success worldwide." said Guillemot.
“Working with Shaun White has been great and I think that shows in the fun and excitement of the game when you play it. This is definitely an area in which we plan to grow our presence.”
