Remember that beauty? Nokia's portable device that worked not just as a phone but as a portable gaming console? Well, it never really had the right backing and ultimately flopped, but Nokia never really tucked the idea away for good.

They recently made N-Gage live again, on their N81 phone, but as a sort of beta. According to Joystiq, they had some good results from that and will soon be bringing it to the acclaimed N95.

The N-Gage may never return as it was, but maybe it's a first step towards cellphone gaming that isn't utter trash, which is what it is currently. And maybe the first real reason why both Nintendo and Sony need to step it up a notch for their portable devices if they want to compete, should it take off.
