Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 has done so darn well that Activision looks happy to have Modern Warfare stand on its own this time around.
The publisher seems intent to give it the full spin-off treatment, which is unsurprising given the 12m copies sold of the first. Modern Warfare "has become our focus now" says Activision.
"All I can tell you (officially) at this point is that Modern Warfare has taken on such a life of its own, it has become our focus now," a staffer tells . "At this point, it's too early to release additional details."
What this means exactly for Call of Duty's future is unknown, but there are likely now about 12 million gamers who've just had an accident in their trousers.
"Everyone on the team is laser-focused on making the most gripping experience we've ever created," said Infinity Ward's CEO Vince Zampella.
Activision has lauded Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as the "best-selling first-person action game of all time." If Infinity Ward takes on Modern Warfare fulltime then it's likely Treyarch, which did a fantastic job with World at War, will continue the Call of Duty brand.
