256 online-player game MAG "only possible" on PS3 boasts Koller

SCEA executive John Koller has said only the PS3 has the juice to power such a "spectacular" game as MAG, which sees 256 players online.

The sheer processing requirements of being able to show that many players at "any given time, and their actions" is beyond the Xbox 360 claims hardware marketing boss Koller.

"MAG is a 256 online-player game which is spectacular," Koller said during the GDC. "If you look at that competitively, itís something thatís only possible on PS3. The processor speed, the ability of PS3 to showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions."

"It's basically like an iteration of SOCOM, where youíre maybe commanding the SEALs, and someone else has the Rangers, and the Green Berets, and so on," he continued, trying to sum up developer Zipper's concept for the ambitious game.

MAG is expected to release later this year, exclusively for the PlayStation 3 console in case you couldn't have guessed that. It was Sony's big hoorah announcement at last year's E3 event.

Are there 256 owners of a PS3? Seriously, if this was an affordable console there would be much rejoicing. As it is, it remains the province of those with money to burn.

In fact there are somewhere around 20 million and going up. Its not that bad of a deal for a PS3. You can get one for $250-$300 on the net if you look hard enough. Don't bring the fanboyism here.

Hmmm, It's easily possible on PC...

the idea of 256 people a side is really awesome.

lets hope they can keep the lag to a minimum.

"Don't bring the fanboyism here." That just doesn't make sense. If I was bashing the PS then it might, but I'm not. I'm bashing the price. Fanboyism...sheesh!

4 player seems like a lot to me already. But 256?! Wouldn't that get a little crowded?

Not if the maps are done right. Even so a battlefield should have you worry about what is coming around every corner. Now you can. Lawl.
