Xbox Live's "relevant" ads will only "enhance" and "not interfere"

Major Nelson has issued a supportive statement to Xbox Live users, saying their "core principles" behind the service won't let ads "interfere with the gaming experience".

This comes after news that Microsoft are to insert ads on the dashboard, which will be quite an "organic part" of it. It's "not good for anyone" if they went all 'Shibuya Crossing.'

"I need to let you know that you don’t need to worry about a huge influx of ads across the dashboard. One of our core principles is to enhance, not interfere with the gaming experience, and we work directly with our partners to only deliver experiences that are relevant to the LIVE community," blogged Major Nelson.

"Silverlight will help make those ads a more organic part of the dashboard, like we’ve done with some of the NXE slots in the past. No one on the team wants to turn the dashboard into something that looks like Shibuya Crossing. That’s just not good for anyone."

Some have raised issues about these ads and Gold subscribers to Xbox Live, after all if you're paying for the service then why should you suffer through advertisements, no matter how 'relevant' they might be?

I cant believe people are willing to put up with this. I mean who didnt see it coming a mile away, this is Macrohard after all, but this is right up there with forcing me to watch advertisement before a movie. I didn't pay to watch ads, I pay my ticket to watch the movie, shoving ads in before the movie is a violation of the deal. I complain about it each time in a theater. Television is free, so ads are ok, its they way they pay for it. I dont watch much television mind you because of the ads. But I understand why they have to do it.

Paying for a service and then being force to look at ads through it is a slap in the face to your customers. This is the future M$ has in store for you.......

"Enhance", oh that is a good one. We are being told that advertising will enhance our gaming experience. We've been told, so we must accept, and go on grazing like good little lambs.:(
