Modern Warfare 2 falls to pirates, illegal copies doing the rounds

Infinity Ward's latest Call of Duty instalment is now in the hands of software swashbucklers, almost a week ahead of its official release date.

So far it would appear the illegal trouble is isolated to the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2. Microsoft has stepped up perma-bans.

Developer Infinity already announced they would be resetting the leaderboards and rank progressions to prevent unfair advantages when November 10th arrives. Microsoft has also stepped up its hunt for illegal copies played over Xbox Live.

Is it just a matter of release impatience, or is this a price rebellion?

I'd agree with everyone else, but probably put an emphasis on the price and perhaps how they've treated the community.

I don't think it's either. Pirates will be Pirates no matter what the reason. They do it because they can, and it wouldn't matter what they had to pay for a legit copy...they're just hackers.

Yeah but having to put money into a game purchase creates "pirates". Greater the money, at least somewhat greater the pirated market. MW2 might be a good example of this spectacular theory. :)

I think the price increase, an experiment by Activision Blizzard for consoles will not increase the number of pirates, but will increase those willing to buy pirate copies. I actually pre-ordered MW2 (PC) for less than what I would have usually paid for a new release (legit too).

Yeah preorders are cheaper, but come with a bit of a mistery. Since you're paying based on the marketing of the game mostly. You don't exactly know what you're going to get.

[off topic]For PC, that may probably be a buggy version. As the case with most PC games. So we end up playing the buggy release and get fed up with the game. Then they patch it, make it "normal", but at that point, I've already squeezed the initial juice of the game... I want my starting experience to be good! My worst case example is probably the whole Total War series.[/off topic]

Back onto the topic, not everybody will preorder it. The most people buy the retail version of the game. I can't back this with actual data, so it's just my assumption. I do anyway. So, to me, it is equally expensive still.

Well IW and Treyarch haven't failed me so far in the CoD series (tho I never played CoD 3), and since this is for my son's Birthday, I had no real choice. Pre-Order or buy on day of release..six of one, etc.

As far as pre-orders for other PC games go (off topic again), I am far more wary. Only pre-ordered one from memory...prefer to hear what early reviews by gamers have to say, and what is said in the Forums. A month's wait can make a big difference as far as patching and price goes.
