Second hand Xbox 360's could be banned from XBL, says MS

Microsoft's Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb has been warning gamers against buying second-hand Xbox 360's, saying that they may not be able to connect to Xbox Live.

He hints at the fact that these system could be collateral damage in the company's on-going battle against modified consoles.

"Our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox Live community remains a top priority," Hryb wrote on his blog.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal, and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs, violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live.

"The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them."

This means that anyone thinking of trying to pick up a 360 cheap, whether it be from eBay or anywhere else, think again.

"This would also be a good time to remind you that the warranty on an Xbox 360 console is not transferable and if you purchase a used console that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to Xbox Live.”

This has nothing to do with modified or "chipped" consoles, and Playstation never took that action - they just voided the lifetime warranty. What this has to do with stopping piracy is anyone's guess.

They make it sound as if every second hand xbox is chipped!

Well frankly, I think it's just common sense not to buy something such as a console second-hand, unless its from an actual retailer.

Are advice would be to get the console brand new if you can, there are some great deals out there for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 at the moment. Christmas is coming soon too, so keep an eye out for deals :)

I bought my PS3 second hand and I've never had any problems with it. Saved a lot of money too!

buying a 360 second hand is a different story though. Too many RRoD!

Oh, so now if an XBox 360 get the RRoD, you have to buy a NEW one! For the new price and everything. And if you don't get a new one, your pretty much banned from Live.
Why does this sound like another Microsoft money making scheme?
And it's kinda funny that they seem to think this will slow down game pirating. I mean, if people already have a PC and the knowledge on how to MAKE a pirated 360 game, then what the heck is gonna stop them from just going and playing it on their PC's instead?!
