PC hardware guys Buffalo have landed Sony PlayStation licensing to put together external hard drive units for the PS3 - which connect via USB.

Buffalo's two drives are both 500GB, which gear up in preparation for Sony's launch of the 'Torne' digital video recorder in March for PS3.

This is the first time ever that Sony has given the nod to third-party hard drive peripherals say Buffalo, reports Andriasang. There are two models, the first being the Piano Black HD-AV500U2/SC which sits horizontally with a fancy blue lit storage meter.

The second is a vertical standing Black HD-CL500U2/SC with no front meter showing storage space left. Both devices have to meet certain standards for Sony, so both are pre-formatted to work straight away with the PlayStation 3 when connected.

It should be noted that the PS3 works with external hard drives anyway, they might just need some fiddling with by the user first is all. These Buffalo units cost 14,800 and 11,800 in Yen respectively, which is around 103 and 82.

Do you already have an external hard drive hooked up, videogamer?

Perhaps this will reduce load times for PS3 players, finally (think "Bayonetta").

Why would it do that herod? While like the idea of this, are sony asking Buffalo to build these or giving them lisence to?It just seems fishy to me.....

Well it seems the hard drive in the PS3 isn't all that fast, as games installed onto the drive still have loooong loading times, where they shouldn't. By allowing a third party company to develp something that Sony obviously can't, problems might be solved. I agree, however that it is a very suspect move. Sony should fix things themselves without asking owners to shell out more dosh to another company. Final Fantasy XIII might be the telling blow for the PS3 hard drive.

I can get an internal 640GB HD for $130, so I think I'll pass on this one.
