Sega comes clean and confirms Shogun 2: Total War, for PC in 2011

Following all the rumour and the leaked fact sheet, publisher Sega concedes defeat and confirms Creative Assembly's Shogun 2: Total War.

It will hit PC exclusively next year with a smaller but 'more personal' scope. It's all about feudal Japan and rival warlords. It's in pre-alpha stage.

The unit roster has been cut back from hundreds to 30-40 and factions have been snipped as well, with eight different Japanese feudal warlords represented. Obviously the geographical location is Japan with the rest of the world left out.

Generals make a return to give a rousing speech before battles, and naval skirmishes will stay with vessels not dependant on the direction of wind but oars and they'll be laden with archers, not cannons. You'll get to see land too to help players stay orientated.

No that wasn't a pun. IGN has managed a sneaky preview.

Sounds like it might be along the lines of Naploeon, instead of the usual TW games. Small, focused and perhaps broken into Chapters. I'm not convinced, and will need to see plenty of previews and reviews before buying.
Many have asked for this title...I just hope they won't turn into haters.

I remember getting Shogun the day of it's release and loving every following minute of playing it (Well, save for the frustrating Geishas :P), but I do agree with you, Herodotus, I'm not entirely convinced... and just the fact that it's scaled down from hundreds to 30-40... well, I don't like that at all. Total war is known for it's massive battles (The largest being in Rome). If they cut this down to pretty much skirmishes, then CA had better have a lot more to keep the gamer's mind interested. Will be watching this very closely. Your last sentence says it all, Herodotus.
