APB studio Realtime Worlds snips staff, post launch restructuring

The developers behind the recent MMO APB has cut back on staff numbers now that their online game is up and running; launch 'very smooth'.

They're focusing their "efforts and resources" on keeping APB going 24/7 now, making new "content and services" to deliver the "best possible".

APB hasn't had the best reception critically with Realtime Worlds' Dave Jones blaming "too high" expectations from the game press, saying many believed it's some kind of online Grand Theft Auto experience when it doesn't go for that.

"We now have to focus our efforts and resources on running APB as a 24/7 online live operation, creating new content and services for the future and ensuring the best possible experience for the players,” said Gary Dale of Realtime, reports Develop.

It's quite common practice for studios to 'shed weight' after a major release as they don't need so many hands now that the project is basically wrapped up or has matured, like an MMO does when it launches. They still need post-launch staff and will be hiring.

No word if those let go were just temps or full-time developers.

Let's hope they haven't cutr back by too much, as in only leaving enough staff for DLC creation and not game balancing and issue-solving.
