Valve working on DoTA says actor

Thanks to voice actor John St. John, the voice of Duke Nukem, we know Valve is still very busy with the Warcraft III mod of unrivalled fame.

Defence of the Ancients, or DoTA, is now a full game project at Valve which isn't surprising as mod dev Icefrog has been given his own team.

"Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at ValveSoftware are awesome!" twittered John 'Nukem' St. John. This particular twitter has since been deleted from the net, but we don't have *that* short an attention sp... what was I...?

Right, yes. DoTA. So successful is this mod that other games have cropped up inspired by its blend of strategy and RPG, which involves Ancients that get powered up by ways of upgrades and the like while AI controlled minions smash each other up.

It's likely to be a standalone release over Steam once the DoTA project is done. Who wouldn't like some tower defence and RPG? No one that's who.

Standalone DotA developed by Icefrog?
Me want!
Anyone got information about a predicted release date?

Yeah! I've heard about this before. Now that Valve is behind it, we can expect a product of even greater quality. And delays as well... :(

And even worse: Steam -.-

LOL Why is Steam bad? It's like PSN and Live for the PC. And good thing it doesn't require you to crack your games in order to play them without the CDs. Steam rocks man :)

OMG .... THIS IS BS !
Didnt they make LoL ? The creators of Dota are now Riot Games , they made LoL - League of Legends.

Steam is bad cause if the servers go down you can't play any of your games, not even the SP only ones which is friggin annoying. It has happened several times. :/ It is slow and buggy too. I find it to be lulz when xfire ingame pops up faster than steam ingame even in steam only games. XD Sometimes steam ingame doesn't even pop up. :/

It pops out in Steam games, not the ones you imported manually... And Steam servers go down for like a few minutes...
You can't compare Xfire to Steam lol

Steam servers rarely go down, almost never because they have the best server system out there so STEAM ROCKS!!!, as for DoTA it would be very nice to see it made by Valve, just a small reminder about Half Life 2 series.

I have to disagree. Even if the server rarely go down, theres still the option. I cant stand the thought that i dont have the possibility to play games i bought whenever whereever i want because im dependant on something thats completely uneccessary.

And yea Wowerine, it may be like PSN or Live. But that doesnt mean any of those is good ;)

With Steam you can download the games you purchased to any system you log into... so Gyorn thats a good thing, and I'm not sure about you not being able to launch games when Steam servers are down, because you can launch Steam in offline mode lol

isnt anyone Annoyed of the fact that League of legends was made for the sole purpose of being dota
By Rogdor (I just got here) on Aug 13, 2010

League of Legends is made by members of the DoTA:AS team, not the original DoTA (which was Icefrog, now employed at Valve).

(Edit: I stand corrected, IceFrog was part of the DoTA:AS team as well)

So depending on how you look at it, Valve may be making the more "authentic" version. I'd put my money on them polishing up the better product either way.

@Gyorn:
As for Steam if the servers go down: Most of the games have an offline mode which they automatically kick into, allowing single-player and LAN gameplay. I understand if you don't like any form of DRM, but you're painting an inaccurate picture of how it works. You rarely hear about Steam's offline mode because it rarely happens.

aaaaa , but wasnt Icefrog just the one who Left off where the others Stopped before him , with his members i mean .

Ice frog And The Members of the DoTa : AS Team were after the original Dota .

and now they split up into Riot games and Icefrog is in Valve .... meaning that There would be a Dota on steam and a LoL on well.... a standalone game .

what about HoN's Ripoff ?
By RaviL (SI Core Member) on Aug 11, 2010

HoN will make nice money, it looks nice feels a bit different from the classic DoTA but they will survive.

I just trust in Valve and them being one of the best companies out there when it comes to providing content - They will make this even better than other rip offs like HoN and Demigod. And since one of the original creators is in the dev team now, I have even more trust in them making this work :)

Looks like i had some old/false information then about Steam. That ranks it 'bearable' now for me ;)
There are however still the problems that steam needs to run (or is that wrong intel, too?) and you need Steam to download the game. I prefer to stick with physical copies and rather pay a few bucks more but know the games always just a grab away.
By Wowerine (SI Elite) on Aug 11, 2010

Actually download games are better. Servers are top notch, and download speed is as good as it gets. And it is much cheaper ya know :)
By Gyorn (SI Core) on Aug 12, 2010

May be fast, but your still bound to Steam. They go down? So do your games (not the playing part but the rest downloading).
By Wowerine (SI Elite) on Aug 12, 2010

hahaha As I said they rarely go down, maybe twice a month for like 5 minutes for maintainance only maybe... :)

I keep hearing how Steam is going to "go down". Where do these rumours come from as they have absolutley no substance to them. Not defending Valve/ Steam but really, online activation and online connection to play is the future. Deal with it.
By Wowerine (SI Elite) on Aug 12, 2010
Wowerine
I'm sure what you said about Steam is true, minus the shutting down part... This way of purchasing and playing games is the future. I believe so.
By Gyorn (SI Core) on Aug 13, 2010

I added the last bracket for a purpose ;)
Wasnt reffering to goigng down for maintance or whatever but rather the company. Sure, might not be likely to happen but does anyone know what will happen the next 10 years? E.g. they might be bought and the new owner decides tp shut steam down.
And yes, bying online is the future. However i hope that wont include onliny activation and crap. There are quite some online shops that allow you to download an image that you can burn on CD if you preffer. Thats the way i like it ;)

I don't think Steam will ever be shut down. Especially now that they started serving Mac games... Mac games were never so popular before Steam started selling them, and now Valve gave the development tools to other companies and there will be even more Mac games...
